Heal Better. Feel Better
One question I hear more often than you may think is:
“If warm water helps, will hotter water work better?”
My answer is simple — no.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While working on The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual, we have spoken with people using sitz baths for hemorrhoid discomfort, fissures, postpartum care and recovery after some medical procedures.
One thing I feel people sometimes get wrong is water temperature.
A sitz bath should feel comfortably warm. It should never feel painfully hot. One recent hospital patient guide recommends warm/lukewarm sitz-bath water around 37°C to 39°C and specifically warns that water that is too hot can cause burns.
That small difference between warm and hot matters.
Why Does Sitz Bath Temperature Matter?
A sitz bath is a shallow warm-water bath used for cleansing and comfort. Medical information describes sitz baths as being used for problems such as pain, itching or muscle spasms and after procedures such as hemorrhoid surgery or an episiotomy.
But warm water and very hot water are two different things.
Hot liquid can cause a scald, which is a type of burn.
And the skin you’re soaking may already be sore or sensitive.
So my rule is:
Dont chase heat. Chase comfort.
If the water makes you pull your hand away or feels unpleasantly hot, dont sit in it.
What Temperature Should a Sitz Bath Be?
A useful reference point is approximately 37°C to 39°C (98.6°F to 102.2°F). A 2026 hospital sitz-bath guide uses this range and warns against hot water because of burn risk.
That does not mean you need to obsess over one exact number.
The main idea is simple:
Warm or lukewarm — not hot.
Different medical situations may come with different instructions, so if your doctor, surgeon or maternity team has given you a temperature or bathing routine, follow that advice.
Don’t Pour Boiling Water Into the Tub
This sounds obvious.
Still, I want to say it clearly.
Never use boiling water in a sitz bath.
Dont pour very hot water into the basin thinking you can sit down after it cools a little.
It is easy to misjudge heat.
A safer approach when preparing bath water is to start cooler and gradually add warmer water. Burn-care guidance also recommends adding cold water first and then hot water when preparing bath water to reduce scald risk.
Mix the water properly before checking it.
Hot spots can remain if very hot water has just been poured into one part of the basin.
Test the Water Before You Sit
This takes a few seconds.
Check the water before sitting down.
Dont test it only after you’re already seated.
Hospital burn-care guidance recommends checking bath temperature with unaffected skin before getting into the water.
If you’re unsure, let the water cool.
Waiting another minute is much better than dealing with a burn.
Hotter Water Does Not Mean Faster Healing
I really dont like the idea that:
More heat = more healing.
That is not how you should use a sitz bath.
For example, medical guidance for anal fissures describes a sitz bath as a warm-water bath and commonly recommends relatively short sessions rather than extreme heat.
A sitz bath is supportive care.
Making the water hotter does not turn it into a stronger treatment.
Instead, excessive heat can damage skin.

Who Needs Extra Care With Temperature?
Some people need to be more careful because they may have trouble judging temperature or moving away from hot water quickly.
That can include some elderly people and people with reduced skin sensation.
Bathroom-safety guidance also identifies burns as one of the main bathroom risks for people with mobility problems.
So if your parent or grandparent is using a sitz bath in Rohini, Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru or anywhere else in India, help them check the setup when needed.
Location changes.
The safety rule doesnt:
Warm water. Stable tub. Dry floor.
Sitz Bath Temperature After Childbirth
Sitz baths are also used by some women after childbirth.
Medical guidance describes sitz baths as one option after an episiotomy and recommends keeping the affected area clean and dry.
But postpartum skin may already be sore.
This is not the time to test how much heat you can tolerate.
Use comfortably warm water and follow the instructions given by your doctor or maternity team.
If you’ve been told to wait before bathing, follow that instruction too.
What If the Water Starts Feeling Too Hot?
Get out of the water safely.
Dont tell yourself:
“I’ll sit another 10 minutes because I already started.”
Your body is giving you useful information.
If something feels too hot or painful, stop.
If you actually get a burn, cool running water is recommended rather than ice. Medical burn guidance says burns and scalds should be cooled promptly; more serious burns need medical attention.
Because a sitz bath involves a sensitive body area, I would not ignore a burn there.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
It has a wide seat and deep bowl and is designed for use with compatible Western-style toilets.
The Manual version uses a simple hand squeeze pump.
There is one continuous grey pipe running from the hand pump to the water-flow nozzle inside the basin.
You squeeze the pump by hand to create gentle water movement.
There is no electric motor required.
I like the simplicity of the Manual version.
But remember:
The pump moves water. It does not control water temperature.
You still need to prepare comfortably warm water before using the tub.
The Heal Company Automatic Sitz Bath Tub – ₹999
We also have our Automatic Sitz Bath Tub for ₹999.
The kit includes:
1 Plastic Sitz Bath Tub, 1 Motor Box with 2 connected pipes and nozzles, 1 12V DC Adaptor, 1 Storage Bag and 1 Instruction Manual.
One nozzle draws water from the basin and the other provides the upward water flow.
Again, circulation does not mean heating.
The Automatic version does not mean you should use hotter water.
And because it includes electrical components, keep the motor box and adaptor dry and follow the supplied instructions.
A Simple Temperature Routine
This is the routine I would follow at home:
Prepare → Mix → Check → Use.
Prepare comfortably warm water.
Mix it properly.
Check the temperature before sitting.
Then use the sitz bath according to your medical advice or product instructions.
Dont keep adding hot water while you’re sitting in the basin.
If the water cools, that does not mean you need to immediately pour very hot water into it.
Is 40°C or More Better?
I wouldnt use that thinking.
There isnt a prize for getting your sitz bath as hot as possible.
A hospital sitz-bath guide specifically aims for about 37°C–39°C to avoid burns.
For comparison, some healthcare settings place strict limits on bath and shower outlet temperatures because hotter water creates a scald risk, especially for vulnerable people.
So dont turn temperature into a competition.
Comfortably warm is enough.

My Biggest Sitz Bath Temperature Mistakes to Avoid
Here are the mistakes I would avoid every time:
- Dont use very hot or boiling water.
- Dont assume hotter means better.
- Dont sit down without checking the water.
- Dont pour very hot water into the basin while you’re sitting in it.
- Dont ignore burning, stinging or unusual pain.
- Dont use ice-cold water to treat an accidental burn; use cool running water and get medical help when needed.
- Dont ignore temperature instructions given by your doctor after childbirth, surgery or another procedure.
These are simple things, but simple things can prevent a bad experience.
A Note From Abhinav & Deepika
When Deepika and I started The Heal Company in Delhi, our aim was to develop practical products that can support comfort and home care.
But selling the tub is only one part of our work.
I also want somebody buying The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual to know how to use it safely.
A sitz bath doesnt need extreme heat.
It doesnt need complicated tricks.
For most normal use, think:
Clean tub. Comfortably warm water. Safe setup. Gentle use.
And remember that a sitz bath can support comfort and hygiene, but it does not replace medicine or medical treatment when those are needed.
