Heal Better. Feel Better
A customer once asked me a very sensible question:
“Abhinav, sitz bath is just warm water. So can anyone use it anytime?”
My answer was — not always.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While working on The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual, we often talk about how a sitz bath can support comfort and hygiene. But knowing when not to use one is just as useful.
There is no single list saying every person with a certain condition must avoid sitz baths. In fact, medical instructions vary a lot. A sitz bath may be recommended after one type of surgery, while a different procedure may come with different bathing rules.
So here is my main rule:
If you have had surgery, have an unexplained wound or bleeding, feel very unwell, or your doctor has told you to keep an area dry, dont start a sitz bath on your own.
What Does “Contraindication” Mean?
The word sounds complicated.
Here it simply means a reason why something may not be suitable or may need medical advice first.
A sitz bath is a shallow warm-water bath. It is often used for comfort and cleansing around the lower pelvic area. For example, warm sitz baths are commonly included in home-care advice for anal fissures and may also be recommended after hemorrhoid surgery.
But that doesnt make it right for every person at every moment.
1. Don’t Start One After Surgery Without Checking Your Instructions
This is probably the biggest point I want readers to remember.
After surgery, dont think:
“Warm water helped my friend, so it must be right for me.”
Different operations have different recovery instructions.
For example, medical guidance after hemorrhoid removal says a surgeon may recommend warm sitz baths. Another current surgical guide recommends short lukewarm sitz baths after a specific type of perineal surgery.
The lesson is not that sitz baths are always good or always bad after surgery.
The lesson is:
Follow the instructions for YOUR surgery.
2. Don’t Use One When You Have Unexplained Heavy Bleeding
A little discomfort and significant bleeding are not the same problem.
After hemorrhoid surgery, medical guidance says people should contact their surgeon if they have a lot of rectal bleeding.
If you’re bleeding heavily or the bleeding is new and unexplained, dont sit at home repeatedly soaking the area hoping the problem disappears.
Get medical advice.
A sitz bath can support comfort in suitable cases. It cannot tell you why you’re bleeding.
3. Don’t Ignore Fever or Worsening Symptoms
Suppose you started taking sitz baths because an area was sore.
Then you develop a fever.
Pain gets worse.
Swelling or redness increases.
Or you notice pus or other concerning drainage.
Those are reasons to contact a healthcare professional rather than simply taking more sitz baths. Medical aftercare guidance lists increasing pain, swelling, warmth, redness, pus and fever among signs that need medical attention.
My opinion here is pretty simple:
Home comfort should never hide a medical warning sign.
4. Don’t Use Very Hot Water
Even when a sitz bath itself is suitable, very hot water isnt.
A sitz bath means warm water, not water hot enough to hurt your skin.
This becomes even more relevant for an elderly person or anyone who cannot judge temperature properly.
Dont think hotter water gives stronger healing.
It doesnt turn a sitz bath into a better treatment.
Comfortably warm water is the goal.

5. Don’t Use It If You Cannot Sit Safely
This point sometimes gets missed because people focus only on the medical condition.
You still have to get onto and off the toilet safely.
If you’re very weak, dizzy, light-headed or likely to fall, dont use a toilet-mounted sitz bath alone.
Some medical guidance tells people with dizziness or feeling faint to seek medical care depending on the situation.
For elderly users especially, I would check:
Is the basin stable? Is the floor dry? Can the person sit and stand safely?
If help is normally needed in the bathroom, dont suddenly remove that help because a sitz bath looks simple.
6. Don’t Use a Tub That Doesnt Fit Your Toilet Properly
Portable sitz bath basins are made for toilet use, but toilet shapes can differ.
A customer in Rohini in Delhi may have a different toilet design from somebody in Bandra in Mumbai, Indiranagar in Bengaluru, Banjara Hills in Hyderabad or Salt Lake in Kolkata.
Check the fit before adding water and sitting down.
If the tub rocks, tilts or does not sit correctly, dont use that setup.
Safety comes before convenience.
7. Don’t Use a Dirty Sitz Bath
A dirty basin is another reason to stop.
Dont think:
“I’ll use it now and clean it later.”
Clean the tub according to its instructions before use when needed and clean it again after use.
Then allow it to dry properly before storing.
Postpartum guidance also stresses keeping healing areas clean and dry and using a clean bathing setup.
I like this simple routine:
Clean → Use → Empty → Clean → Dry → Store.
8. Don’t Add Medicines or Chemicals on Your Own
Some people see sitz bath recipes online and start adding salt, antiseptic liquid, essential oils, soap or other products.
Be careful.
There actually are medical situations where healthcare teams recommend a particular additive. For example, one hospital’s post-surgical instructions prescribe a specific antiseptic product for a particular type of wound.
That does not mean everybody should copy that mixture.
If your healthcare professional has prescribed something, use it exactly as directed.
Otherwise, dont turn your sitz bath into a home experiment.
9. Don’t Assume an Open Wound Automatically Means “Yes” or “No”
This is where internet advice gets confusing.
People sometimes say:
“Never soak a wound.”
Others say:
“Sitz baths are good for wounds.”
Both statements are too broad.
For some procedures, medical teams specifically recommend sitz baths to clean surgical incisions. For other procedures or situations, your care team may give different bathing instructions.
So if you have stitches, an open wound or have recently undergone surgery, ask the doctor who knows what procedure you had.
That answer is far better than a general internet rule.
10. Don’t Use a Sitz Bath as a Replacement for Treatment
This one matters a lot to Deepika and me.
At The Heal Company, our work is around devices that can support comfort and home care without medicines.
But supporting comfort without medicine does not mean replacing medicine when medicine is needed.
For example, a sitz bath may help with discomfort from an anal fissure, but medical guidance also describes prescription creams, injections and surgery when home care does not solve the problem.
If your doctor prescribed medicine, dont stop it because warm water makes you feel better.
If surgery is needed, a sitz bath isnt a substitute for surgery.
What About Sitz Bath After Childbirth?
This deserves its own mention.
After childbirth, women may have soreness or stitches. Medical aftercare guidance says sitz baths can be used after an episiotomy but advises waiting at least 24 hours after giving birth before taking one.
That is a good example of why timing matters.
Dont automatically use a sitz bath immediately after delivery just because you already have one at home.
Follow your maternity team’s instructions.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
It has a wide seat and deep bowl and is designed for use with compatible Western-style toilets.
The Manual model uses a hand squeeze pump.
One continuous grey pipe runs from the hand pump to the water-flow nozzle inside the tub. You squeeze the pump by hand to create gentle water movement.
No electric motor is required.
I like this version because the working idea is very simple.
But buying the tub doesnt automatically mean a sitz bath is suitable for every medical condition.
The product helps you take a sitz bath. Your healthcare professional decides whether a sitz bath is right for a specific medical situation.
The Heal Company Automatic Sitz Bath Tub – ₹999
Our Automatic Sitz Bath Tub costs ₹999.
The kit contains 1 Plastic Sitz Bath Tub, 1 Motor Box with 2 connected pipes and nozzles, 1 12V DC Adaptor, 1 Storage Bag and 1 Instruction Manual.
One nozzle draws water from the basin.
The second provides upward water flow.
The motor box and adaptor should remain dry and the product should be used according to its supplied instructions.
Automatic water circulation makes the process different from squeezing the Manual pump. It does not change the medical situations in which you should or shouldnt take a sitz bath.
My Simple “Stop and Ask” Rule
Before using a sitz bath, I would stop and ask a healthcare professional if:
- You recently had surgery and were not given bathing instructions.
- You have significant or unexplained bleeding.
- You have fever or worsening pain, swelling or redness.
- You have a wound and dont know whether it can be soaked.
- You feel dizzy or cannot sit safely.
- Your symptoms keep getting worse instead of better.
- You have been specifically told to keep the area dry.
This is not about making people scared of sitz baths.
It is about using a simple home-care tool at the right time.

A Note From Abhinav & Deepika
When Deepika and I started The Heal Company in Delhi, we wanted to build practical products for comfort and home care.
But I dont want our customers thinking every product should be used by every person every day.
Sometimes the safest thing you can do is not use it yet and ask your doctor first.
That is also part of better home care.
