Heal Better. Feel Better
A customer once asked me something I think every sitz bath user should ask:
“Abhinav, can a sitz bath also have side effects?”
Yes, it can — especially when it is used incorrectly.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While developing The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual, we have spoken with people using sitz baths for hemorrhoid discomfort, fissures, postpartum care and recovery after certain procedures.
Most problems are not because a sitz bath is naturally dangerous. They usually come from things like water being too hot, sitting too long, using irritating ingredients, poor cleaning or continuing home care when symptoms actually need medical attention.
So lets talk about what you should watch for.
Is a Sitz Bath Generally Safe?
For many people, a plain warm-water sitz bath can be a simple form of supportive home care.
Medical guidance commonly mentions warm sitz baths for problems such as anal fissures and for comfort after some procedures.
But a sitz bath is still something you’re doing to sensitive skin.
My simple rule is:
It should feel soothing, not painful.
If your symptoms get worse during or after a sitz bath, dont keep doing the same thing just because somebody told you sitz baths are good.
1. Skin Burning From Water That Is Too Hot
This is probably the side effect I worry about most.
A sitz bath needs comfortably warm water — not very hot water.
Very hot water can scald skin.
One hospital’s sitz-bath instructions use lukewarm water around 37°C to 39°C and warn against excessively hot water because of burn risk.
Think of warm tea versus boiling tea.
Both are hot, but your skin knows the difference very quickly.
Test the water before sitting.
If you’re unsure, wait for it to cool.
Hotter does not mean better healing.
2. More Irritation Instead of Less
A sitz bath should not leave the area feeling more irritated.
Sometimes the problem isnt the water.
It is what somebody has put into the water.
People add:
- Soap
- Shower gel
- Antiseptic liquids
- Essential oils
- Salt
- Epsom salt
- Baking soda
- Apple cider vinegar
- Herbal products
Some medical situations may involve a clinician recommending a particular additive. That does not make random DIY mixtures safe for everyone.
My preference for normal home use is simple:
Dont add anything unless you have a good reason or your healthcare professional has asked you to.
Plain comfortably warm water is often enough.
3. Dryness or Sensitive Skin
Long or repeated soaking may not suit everyone’s skin.
If you notice that the skin feels increasingly dry, itchy or uncomfortable after your sitz bath, dont simply increase the number of baths.
Look at what you’re doing.
How long are you soaking?
How frequently?
Are you adding soap or another product?
Are you rubbing the skin afterward?
Sometimes doing less makes more sense.
4. Pain Getting Worse
This is one I dont want people ignoring.
Suppose you’re using a sitz bath for hemorrhoid or fissure discomfort.
After a few sessions, your pain is getting worse rather than better.
Dont think:
“Maybe I need hotter water or a longer bath.”
That may be exactly the wrong response.
Pain can have many causes. A sitz bath cannot diagnose them.
Medical guidance for anal fissures includes warm sitz baths as one home-care measure, but it also describes other treatments when symptoms do not settle.
If pain is severe, worsening or persistent, get medical advice.
5. Dizziness or Feeling Weak
Warm water can be relaxing.
But if you start feeling dizzy, weak or faint, stop.
Get up carefully and only when it is safe.
This matters even more for elderly users or someone who already has balance problems.
Imagine an elderly user in Rohini in Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru or Chennai.
The biggest sitz bath problem may not even be the condition they’re treating.
It could be a wet bathroom floor or difficulty standing back up.
Keep the floor dry and ask somebody to help if needed.
6. Infection Risk From Poor Cleaning
A sitz bath itself is not supposed to create an infection.
Poor hygiene is the problem to watch.
A basin that stays dirty and wet between uses isnt how I would want a personal-care product handled.
After use:
Empty → Clean → Rinse → Dry → Store.
Wash your hands too.
If several people use the same basin, clean it properly between users.
And dont store a wet tub inside a closed bag immediately after use

7. Redness, Swelling or Unusual Discharge
If you notice increasing redness, swelling, unusual discharge, unpleasant smell or fever, dont keep trying to solve the problem with another sitz bath.
Those symptoms can need medical evaluation.
Post-surgical guidance commonly tells patients to contact their medical team when they develop symptoms such as increasing pain, swelling, redness, drainage or fever.
A sitz bath is supportive care.
It is not an antibiotic and it does not treat every infection.
8. Bleeding That Gets Worse
Small amounts of bleeding can occur with some conditions, but significant or increasing bleeding should not simply be ignored.
If you have heavy bleeding, bleeding that doesnt stop, or bleeding you cannot explain, contact a healthcare professional.
Dont sit in warm water repeatedly hoping it will disappear.
You need to know why you’re bleeding.
9. Problems From Sitting Too Long
Some people think:
10 minutes helps me, so 45 minutes must help me much more.
That isnt a good way to think about sitz baths.
Medical instructions often recommend relatively short sessions, depending on the condition and treatment plan.
Follow the instructions given for your situation.
A sitz bath isnt something you need to sit in for hours.
10. Falls and Slipping
This isnt technically a skin side effect, but it is a real sitz bath safety issue.
Water can spill.
Bathroom tiles get slippery.
The toilet-mounted basin can also feel different from sitting on the toilet normally.
Before using it:
Check that the basin fits securely.
Keep the floor dry.
Dont stand up suddenly if you feel dizzy.
For elderly people or somebody with limited mobility, have help nearby if needed.
11. Problems After Surgery
This is where general internet advice can cause confusion.
One person may be told to take sitz baths after surgery.
Another may be told to keep a wound dry.
Both instructions can be correct for different procedures.
For example, sitz baths may be recommended after hemorrhoid surgery, while other wounds can have different bathing instructions.
So dont decide based on what happened to your friend.
Follow the instructions for your own surgery.
Sitz Bath Side Effects After Childbirth
After childbirth, the area can already be tender.
There may also be stitches or an episiotomy.
Sitz baths can be part of postpartum comfort care in some cases. Medical guidance also stresses keeping the area clean and dry and watching for signs of infection.
If you notice worsening pain, bad-smelling discharge, fever or something that does not feel right, contact your maternity team.
And dont make the water extremely hot because the area feels sore.
Gentle care is better.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
The tub has a wide comfort seat and deep bowl and is designed for use with compatible Western-style toilets.
The Manual model has a hand squeeze pump.
There is one continuous grey pipe connecting the hand pump to the water-flow nozzle inside the basin.
You squeeze the pump by hand to create gentle water movement.
There is no electric motor needed.
I like the Manual version because the system stays simple.
But the product still needs to be used correctly.
The pump does not control temperature.
It also does not mean you should keep pumping harder if you’re uncomfortable.
Comfortable warm water and gentle use are enough.
The Heal Company Automatic Sitz Bath Tub – ₹999
Our Automatic Sitz Bath Tub costs ₹999.
The kit includes 1 Plastic Sitz Bath Tub, 1 Motor Box with 2 connected pipes and nozzles, 1 12V DC Adaptor, 1 Storage Bag and 1 Instruction Manual.
One nozzle draws water from the basin.
The other provides the upward water flow.
The motor box and adaptor need to stay dry.
Automatic circulation gives you powered water movement instead of repeatedly squeezing the Manual pump.
It does not make the sitz bath a stronger medical treatment.
When Should You Stop Using a Sitz Bath?
I would stop and get medical advice if you experience:
- Severe or increasing pain
- Significant bleeding
- A burn or blistering
- Increasing swelling or redness
- Fever
- Unusual or bad-smelling discharge
- Dizziness or fainting
- Symptoms that keep getting worse
You should also ask your healthcare professional before using a sitz bath after surgery if you were not given clear bathing instructions.
The biggest mistake is continuing because:
“It is only warm water, so it cant hurt.”
Your body is giving you feedback.
Listen to it.
My Simple Rule for Safer Sitz Bath Use
Deepika and I like keeping things easy to remember.
My rule is:
Warm. Clean. Gentle. Short. Safe.
Use comfortably warm water.
Keep your tub clean.
Dont add random ingredients.
Be gentle with sensitive skin.
Follow the recommended soaking time.
Keep your bathroom setup safe.
And if your symptoms are getting worse, stop treating the problem yourself and speak with a qualified healthcare professional.

A Note From Abhinav & Deepika
When Deepika and I started The Heal Company in Delhi, our aim was to develop practical products that support comfort and home care.
But a product should never make somebody ignore their body.
If your sitz bath feels comfortable and you’re using it as advised, good.
If it burns, hurts or makes symptoms worse, stop.
Sometimes better home care means knowing when home care is no longer enough.
