Heal Better. Feel Better
When Deepika and I speak with people looking for a sitz bath, most calls are about piles, fissures or postpartum care. But every now and then, someone asks a different question:
“Can I use a sitz bath for a Bartholin’s cyst?”
This is a good question because warm-water soaking is actually used as a self-care measure for some Bartholin’s cysts. Public-health guidance recommends sitting in warm water a few times a day for about 3 to 4 days after the lump has been diagnosed as a Bartholin’s cyst.
But please dont read that as “a sitz bath cures every Bartholin’s cyst.”
Some cysts are small and settle down. Some get infected and become an abscess. Those can need antibiotics, drainage or another medical procedure.
Let me explain it in simple words.
What Is a Bartholin’s Cyst?
There are small Bartholin glands near the vaginal opening. These glands normally make fluid.
Sometimes the small opening of a gland gets blocked. Fluid then builds up and a lump can form. This is called a Bartholin’s cyst.
The lump is usually on one side.
A small cyst may not hurt at all. A larger cyst can cause discomfort when sitting or walking. If it gets infected, it can become very painful and form an abscess.
This is also why I would not recommend trying to diagnose the lump yourself.
If you notice a new lump in or around the vaginal area, get it checked by a doctor.
Can a Sitz Bath Help a Bartholin’s Cyst?
Yes, warm-water soaking may help in some cases.
For a diagnosed Bartholin’s cyst, guidance recommends sitting in a warm bath a few times each day for around 3 to 4 days. Warm soaking can help with discomfort, and a small infected cyst may sometimes open and drain by itself.
This is where a sitz bath can be useful.
Instead of filling a complete bathtub, a toilet-fit sitz bath gives you a smaller area for warm-water soaking.
This can be much easier in Indian homes where full-size bathtubs are not common.
Whether someone lives in Rohini in Delhi, Andheri in Mumbai, Indiranagar in Bengaluru, Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, Salt Lake in Kolkata or Vaishali Nagar in Jaipur, a Western toilet is much more common than a bathtub.
How Warm Water May Help
Think of a sitz bath as gentle supportive care.
Warm-water soaking can help ease discomfort. For a small cyst, repeated warm soaking may also encourage natural drainage. After certain procedures for an infected cyst or abscess, warm soaking may also be advised to help keep the area clean and ease discomfort.
But the warm water is not magic.
It cannot promise that every cyst will drain.
A recent hospital patient guide says warm baths for around 10–20 minutes, three to four times daily are sometimes recommended to encourage natural drainage, while also pointing out that it is not clear how well this works and that a suspected abscess should be checked by a doctor.
I like that advice because it does not make a big promise.

Please Dont Squeeze the Cyst
This is one thing I really want people to remember.
Dont squeeze, pierce or try to drain a Bartholin’s cyst yourself.
It may be tempting when the lump becomes uncomfortable. But public-health advice specifically says not to squeeze or drain it yourself because this can cause infection.
If it opens naturally, keep the area clean and dry.
Trying to force it open is different.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
This is where our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual may be useful when a doctor has advised warm-water sitz bathing.
Our tub is designed to fit on a compatible Western toilet.
You add comfortably warm water and sit over the tub. It gives you a simple way to do warm-water care without filling a bathtub.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs Rs 499.
We also have our Automatic Version for Rs 899.
The main thing I like about the Manual model is simplicity. You dont need a complicated setup just to take a warm sitz bath.
For a Bartholin’s cyst, however, check that your doctor is happy for you to use this type of warm-water soaking.
How to Take a Sitz Bath for a Bartholin’s Cyst
If your doctor has confirmed that you have a Bartholin’s cyst and recommended warm-water soaking, keep the process simple.
Use comfortably warm water. It should feel soothing, not painfully hot.
Public-health guidance suggests warm bathing a few times each day for 3 to 4 days. Another hospital guide describes soaking for up to about 20 minutes at a time. Your own doctor may give you different instructions based on the cyst.
After soaking, gently dry the area.
Dont rub hard.
Also wash the sitz bath properly after every use and let it dry before storing it.
I would also avoid randomly adding oils, chemicals or home mixtures unless your doctor has specifically told you to use something.
Simple warm water is usually the starting point described in medical guidance.
When a Sitz Bath Is Not Enough
This part matters more than selling a product.
A Bartholin’s cyst can become infected and turn into an abscess.
Get medical help if the lump quickly becomes bigger or more painful, contains pus, or becomes hot, swollen, red or very tender. Feeling unwell or developing a high temperature are also warning signs.
An infected cyst may need antibiotics. If antibiotics dont work, or if the cyst keeps returning, a medical procedure may be needed to drain it.
Some cysts may need a small catheter placed after drainage so that fluid can continue coming out while the area heals. Recurrent cases can need another procedure that creates a more lasting drainage opening.
A sitz bath does not replace these treatments.

What If the Cyst Bursts by Itself?
Sometimes a Bartholin’s cyst may open and drain naturally.
If this happens, pain may start feeling better. Public-health guidance says that if a cyst bursts by itself, keep the area clean and dry to reduce the chance of infection.
Dont keep pressing it to try and remove more fluid.
And if you have continuing pain, swelling, fever or other worrying symptoms, speak with your doctor.
What About Bartholin’s Cyst After Age 40?
There is another point women should know.
If you develop a new lump near the vaginal opening after age 40, get it checked promptly. Medical guidance says a doctor may recommend testing the mass because, although cancer in this area is rare, a new lump at this age needs proper assessment.
This isn’t something to panic about.
It is simply something not to ignore.
Why We Talk About This at The Heal Company
Deepika and I started The Heal Company around the idea of making simple devices that can support care and comfort at home.
Our line about healing without medicines does not mean every health problem should be treated without medicine.
That would be wrong.
A warm sitz bath can be useful supportive care for some conditions. A Bartholin’s cyst is a good example because warm soaking is actually included in medical self-care guidance.
But if there is an infection or abscess, medical treatment may still be needed.
I would rather tell a customer that clearly.
