Sitz Bath for Episiotomy Care: What New Moms Need to Know

By Abhinav Jain, Founder – The Heal Company

Heal Better. Feel Better

When a baby comes home, almost everyone asks the same questions.

Is the baby sleeping? Is the baby feeding well? Is the baby comfortable?

But I feel one question gets asked much less — how is the mother feeling?

At The Heal Company, we have spoken with families from Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Lucknow and many other parts of India. Post-delivery care comes up again and again. Mothers may be dealing with soreness and stitches while also taking care of a newborn.

If you had an episiotomy during delivery, even normal things like sitting, walking or using the toilet may feel uncomfortable for some time.

This is where simple warm-water care can be useful. Medical guidance recommends keeping episiotomy stitches clean and says bathing the area daily with plain warm water can be part of after-birth care.

A sitz bath gives you a simple way to soak the perineal area in warm water without filling a full bathtub.

Let me explain it in very simple words.

What Is an Episiotomy?

An episiotomy is a small surgical cut made in the perineum, which is the area between the vaginal opening and anus.

It may be needed during some vaginal births, such as when the baby needs to be delivered quickly or when an assisted delivery is needed. After delivery, the cut is normally closed using dissolvable stitches.

The stitches need time to heal.

Medical guidance says stitches generally heal within around a month, though soreness often improves earlier.

Every mother is different, though.

Someone recovering after delivery in Rohini, Delhi may have a very different experience from a mother in Pune, Chennai or Kolkata. So dont compare your recovery time with your friend, sister or someone you watched online.

What Is a Sitz Bath?

A sitz bath is actually very simple.

You sit in shallow warm water so that the perineal area gets soaked.

You can do this in a bathtub, but many Indian bathrooms dont have one. Even if you have a bathtub, filling a large tub just for this small area can feel like too much work.

A sitz bath tub made for a Western toilet makes the process much easier.

This was one of the reasons we developed The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.

You place the sitz bath securely over a compatible Western toilet, add warm water and sit comfortably.

Simple.

Can a Sitz Bath Help With Episiotomy Care?

Warm water is commonly recommended as part of basic care after an episiotomy.

Current medical guidance advises washing or bathing stitches every day using plain warm water, followed by carefully patting the area dry. It also recommends keeping the cut and surrounding area clean.

Warm water can also feel soothing when the area is sore.

There is another small benefit that many new mothers may appreciate. Passing urine can sometimes sting after an episiotomy. Medical guidance says pouring warm water over the outer vaginal area while urinating may help reduce this discomfort.

I see a sitz bath as a comfort and hygiene tool, not some magic treatment.

It does not replace your doctor. It does not replace medicine when medicine is needed. And it cannot promise that stitches will heal faster.

That difference matters.

How to Use a Sitz Bath After an Episiotomy

Before using a sitz bath after delivery, ask your doctor or midwife if it is suitable for you and when you should start. Your own medical team’s advice should always come before general information you read online.

Once they say you can use one, keep things simple.

Clean the sitz bath tub properly. Place it securely on the Western toilet and add comfortably warm water. Dont use very hot water.

Sit gently and allow the affected area to soak.

When you’re done, stand up carefully and gently pat the area dry. Dont rub the stitches.

I would also not add salt, antiseptic, essential oils or home remedies unless your doctor has specifically asked you to use something. Public health guidance for episiotomy care recommends plain warm water.

Sometimes simple really is better.

The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual

At The Heal Company, Deepika and I wanted to make sitz bathing easier for people at home.

Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual is designed for use on a Western toilet.

That means you dont need a bathtub. You dont need to sit inside a large bucket. And you dont need a complicated setup every time you want a warm-water soak.

The Manual Version costs Rs 499.

We also have an Automatic Version costing Rs 899.

Both are made around the same basic idea — making sitz bathing easier at home.

For a new mother already handling feeding schedules, changing diapers and getting very little sleep, I feel the simpler the recovery routine is, the better.

Keep Your Sitz Bath Clean

Hygiene after delivery needs attention.

Wash the sitz bath before and after using it. Keep it clean and dry when stored.

Also wash your hands before and after using the toilet or changing sanitary pads. Pads should be changed regularly during recovery. These small habits help keep the episiotomy area clean.

And again — plain warm water is normally enough for washing the stitches unless your doctor tells you something different.

Dont Forget About Constipation

This might sound unrelated, but it isn’t.

After childbirth, some mothers get worried about their first bowel movement, specially when they have stitches.

Keeping stools soft can make things easier. Drinking enough water and eating foods containing fibre, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, can help prevent constipation.

If constipation becomes a problem, talk with your doctor or midwife instead of just struggling with it.

Your recovery is not only about the stitches. Your whole body has just been through childbirth.

Give it some time.

When a Sitz Bath Is NOT Enough

This is one part I dont want any mother to ignore.

If your pain is becoming worse rather than better, the stitches become increasingly painful, you notice bad-smelling discharge, or the skin around the cut becomes red and swollen, contact your doctor or midwife. These can be signs of an infection.

A sitz bath cannot treat an infection.

Please dont keep taking warm baths for days hoping a serious problem will disappear on its own.

Get medical help.

My View as Founder of The Heal Company

When Deepika and I started The Heal Company, our idea was to make simple devices that can support people during recovery and make everyday care easier.

But I also dont want to make a sitz bath sound like something it isn’t.

The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual is a tool for warm-water sitz bathing. For postpartum and episiotomy care, your doctor or midwife should decide what care is right for you.

What our product can do is make the actual sitz-bath process easier to manage at home.

And if you’re confused about the product, you can actually speak with us.

If you call, one of us — Abhinav Jain or Deepika Jain, Founders of The Heal Company — will pick up your call, so feel free to call and clear your questions about the product.
