Heal Better. Feel Better
After rectal surgery, even something as normal as sitting down or going to the toilet can suddenly feel like a big job.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company, along with Deepika Jain. While speaking with people looking for sitz bath tubs, I have noticed something: many people buy a sitz bath after surgery, but are still confused about how and when they should use it.
They ask things like, “Should I use hot or warm water?”, “Can I use it after every bowel movement?” and “Will a sitz bath heal my surgery wound?”
My answer starts with one simple point: your surgeon’s instructions come first.
A sitz bath can be a very useful part of recovery after some anal and rectal surgeries. It may help with cleaning, relaxation and discomfort. But it doesn’t replace medicines, dressings, follow-up visits or any other treatment your surgeon has given you.
Why Is a Sitz Bath Used After Rectal Surgery?
A sitz bath means soaking the anal and nearby area in comfortably warm water.
This is not just something people do because it “feels good.”
A nursing procedure manual from India’s Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital lists sitz baths for people who have had rectal surgery. It describes their purposes as cleansing the area, relaxing it, increasing circulation, helping healing and relieving discomfort.
Post-operative guidance from other medical centres also recommends warm-water bathing after certain anal and rectal operations.
So there is a proper medical reason why you may hear your surgeon say, “Take a sitz bath after surgery.”
What Does Warm Water Actually Do?
Think about your hand when you hold it under comfortably warm water after a tiring day. Your muscles start feeling loose and relaxed.
A similar idea applies here.
Warm water can provide comfort around a sore surgical area. It also gives you a gentle way of cleaning the area without aggressive rubbing.
Safdarjung Hospital’s nursing guidance describes a sitz bath as helping relax the area and provide relief from discomfort.
That does not mean the water itself is magically repairing the surgery.
Your body is doing the healing. Your surgeon is managing your medical care. The sitz bath is there to support your recovery and comfort.
How to Take a Sitz Bath After Rectal Surgery
There is no single routine that is correct after every rectal operation.
For example, one post-operative guide recommends warm baths for at least 10–15 minutes and suggests doing them several times during the day. Another guide advises warm-water soaking and gentle cleansing after bowel movements.
Your own surgeon may give different instructions depending on your operation.
A simple routine, when your surgeon has allowed sitz bathing, may look like this:
- Clean your sitz bath tub before use.
- Fill it with comfortably warm water as instructed.
- Sit gently so the affected area is in contact with the water.
- Stay for the amount of time your doctor has advised.
- Get up carefully.
- Gently pat the area dry rather than rubbing it.
- Clean the tub after use.
If you feel weak or dizzy after surgery, don’t try getting up quickly or using the bath without help.
Safdarjung Hospital’s guidance specifically says patients who are weak or unsteady should be assisted and checked for dizziness or weakness during a sitz bath.

Should I Use a Sitz Bath After a Bowel Movement?
Your surgeon may recommend this.
After rectal surgery, wiping a tender area again and again may be uncomfortable.
One hospital’s post-operative guidance recommends gently cleaning the area with water after bowel movements. Another advises taking a sitz bath or tub bath after a bowel movement when possible.
This is one of the reasons I feel having a toilet-mounted sitz bath at home can be quite useful during recovery.
You don’t need to fill a large bathtub every time.
You can place the sitz bath on a compatible Western toilet and use it as directed by your doctor.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
This brings me to our own product, The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.
We designed it for people who want a simple way to take a sitz bath while sitting on a Western toilet.
The Manual model has a hand-operated pump connected with a pipe. It doesn’t need electricity for the pump.
Price: ₹499
We also make The Heal Company Sitz Bath Tub Automatic, priced at ₹999.
The Automatic model provides powered water movement, while the Manual model lets you operate the water flow using the hand pump.
For someone recovering after rectal surgery, I personally think convenience matters. When sitting and moving is already uncomfortable, a simple setup can make daily care less troublesome.
But please check with your surgeon before using either version after an operation. The type of surgery, wound and dressing can change what care is right for you.
Plain Water or Should You Add Something?
Don’t turn your sitz bath into a chemistry experiment.
One major post-operative rectal-surgery guide specifically recommends bathing in plain water.
If your surgeon has prescribed something to add to the water, follow that advice.
Otherwise, don’t randomly add antiseptic liquids, oils, powders or home remedies to a fresh surgical area.
People often think stronger cleaning means better cleaning. Around healing tissue, that is not always true.
Don’t Forget About Constipation
This is a big part of rectal surgery recovery.
Hard stool and heavy straining can make bowel movements much more uncomfortable.
Indian National Health Mission guidance for anal fissures recommends avoiding straining, increasing dietary fibre and fluids, maintaining anal hygiene and using sitz baths as part of non-drug management.
Your surgeon may give you specific instructions about food, fluids, fibre or medicines to keep stools manageable.
Follow those instructions rather than starting or changing medicines yourself.
What Is Normal After Surgery?
This depends heavily on what operation you had.
Some discomfort and some bleeding with bowel movements can occur after certain rectal surgeries. One post-operative guide says some bleeding can be expected, but advises contacting the surgeon when bleeding doesn’t stop, becomes worse or includes blood clots.
Don’t use a sitz bath to cover up a symptom that is getting worse.
If something feels wrong, contact your surgical team.

When Should You Call Your Doctor?
Call your surgeon or medical team if you develop symptoms they have told you to watch for.
Problems such as worsening or heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pain, trouble urinating, fever or signs that could suggest an infection need medical attention rather than simply taking more sitz baths.
If you have been given discharge papers, keep them somewhere easy to find. Those instructions are more specific to your operation than any general blog on the internet.
Rectal Surgery Care in India
People looking for rectal surgery treatment or follow-up care should use qualified medical services rather than relying only on home treatment.
For example, Delhi Government currently lists anorectal surgical services at Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, while Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital lists an anorectal clinic among its surgical services.
Whether you are recovering in Rohini in Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru or another part of India, the same rule applies: use home-care products as support, not as a replacement for your surgeon.
Making Recovery a Little Easier at Home
When Deepika Jain and I started The Heal Company in Delhi, our idea was to build devices that make home healing and comfort simpler.
With something like rectal surgery, I don’t believe in making huge promises.
A sitz bath will not replace your operation, medicine or doctor’s care.
What it can do, when your surgeon recommends it, is give you a simple way to use warm water for cleaning, relaxation and comfort during recovery.
That is where The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual fits.
