Heal Better. Feel Better
Constipation sounds like a small problem until you are the person sitting in the bathroom for 20 minutes, pushing and waiting for something to happen.
At The Heal Company, I have heard questions from people in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur and other parts of India asking something very simple:
“Can a sitz bath help me pass stool when I am constipated?”
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. And my answer is — a warm sitz bath may help you feel relaxed and make bowel movements more comfortable, but it does not directly cure constipation or remove stool from your intestine.
That difference matters.
Let us understand what is actually happening.
What Happens When You Are Constipated?
Constipation means your bowel movements become less frequent or stool becomes hard, dry or difficult to pass.
You may also:
- strain while passing stool
- feel you have not emptied fully
- have stomach discomfort
- feel bloated
- pass hard or lumpy stool
Common reasons include not eating enough fibre, drinking too little fluid, low physical activity, ignoring the urge to use the toilet, changes in routine and some medicines.
So constipation mainly starts inside your digestive system.
This is why a sitz bath should not be sold as something that “cures constipation.”
It doesn’t.
Then How Can a Sitz Bath Help With Constipation?
Here is where things get more useful.
Passing a hard stool can involve a lot of straining. The muscles around the anus can also become tense, particularly when passing stool is painful.
Warm water may help these muscles relax.
An older clinical study measured anal sphincter activity before and after warm-water bathing. Researchers found a drop in internal anal sphincter activity and pressure following warm-water bathing.
That gives us a possible reason why people often find warm sitz baths soothing around bowel movements.
But I want to be clear about the evidence.
Research reviews have found that evidence for sitz baths treating anorectal problems is limited. Sitz baths should be seen mainly as supportive comfort care, rather than a proven treatment that fixes the underlying bowel problem.

Think of It as Relaxing the Exit, Not Fixing the Traffic
This is the easiest way I explain it.
Think of constipation like traffic stuck on a road.
A sitz bath does not clear all that traffic.
Warm water may simply help relax the area at the end of the road and make you more comfortable.
To actually manage constipation, you normally need to look at what is making the stool hard or difficult to move in the first place.
That could mean fibre, fluids, movement, toilet habits or medical treatment when needed.
Constipation Can Also Lead to Anal Discomfort
This is another reason sitz baths and constipation often get talked about together.
Hard stools and repeated straining can make problems around the anus worse. For example, constipation and straining are commonly linked with hemorrhoid symptoms.
Warm sitz baths are one of the home measures used to relieve hemorrhoid pain. But constipation management still includes things such as fibre, enough fluids and avoiding straining.
So if somebody from Ahmedabad calls us saying:
“I am constipated and the area hurts after passing stool. Will your tub help?”
I would not tell that person our tub will cure the constipation.
I would say that warm-water sitz bathing may soothe the area and help it relax, while the constipation itself needs to be managed separately.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
This is exactly where The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual can be useful as a home-care device.
Instead of filling a bathtub or trying to sit inside a bucket, our Sitz Bath Tub is made to sit over a compatible Western toilet.
The Manual model has a hand-operated pump connected to the tub. You can use the pump to create water movement without electricity.
The Heal Company Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
We also have our Automatic Sitz Bath Tub for ₹999, which uses a powered water-flow system instead of the hand-operated pump.
For constipation-related discomfort, both products are about comfort, warm-water care and easier sitz bathing at home.
They are not laxatives and they do not medically treat the cause of constipation.
What Actually Helps Constipation?
This part should not be skipped.
If constipation is the real problem, work on the constipation too.
Current health guidance recommends gradually increasing fibre, drinking enough fluids, staying physically active, going to the toilet when you feel the urge and developing a regular toilet routine.
Your toilet position can make a difference as well.
Putting your feet on a small stool so that your knees are above your hips may make passing stool easier for some people.
I like this approach because it is simple.
Warm sitz bath = comfort and relaxation.
Food + water + activity + good toilet habits = constipation management.
You may need medical treatment as well when these steps are not enough.
Don’t Push Harder and Harder
When nothing is happening, our natural reaction is often to push harder.
That is not always a good idea.
Repeated straining can add pressure around the anus and may make existing hemorrhoid problems worse. Guidance for hemorrhoids specifically recommends avoiding straining and spending long periods sitting on the toilet.
Give yourself time.
Don’t keep sitting on the toilet scrolling on your phone for half an hour.
If nothing happens, forcing it harder isn’t automatically the answer.

What About a Sitz Bath After Passing Hard Stool?
This is where I personally feel the product makes the most sense.
Suppose someone in Chandigarh passes a very hard stool and afterwards the anal area feels sore.
Warm-water bathing may feel soothing.
Research from India has also looked at sitz bathing for people with anal fissures. One randomized study from Nagpur found that people using sitz baths did not have significantly different overall pain after surgery, but they did report less anal burning.
Another Indian study had people with acute anal fissures use plain lukewarm-water sitz baths alongside fibre treatment.
Again, this isn’t proof that sitz baths cure constipation.
It shows why warm-water bathing continues to be used as a comfort measure around anal problems.
Keep the Sitz Bath Simple
You don’t need to turn the water into some homemade medicine.
Plain, comfortably warm water is normally enough for a basic sitz bath.
Don’t use water that feels painfully hot. Very hot water can hurt skin.
And don’t randomly add strong antiseptics, oils or other products because somebody on social media said they will “clean everything.”
If your doctor has asked you to use something specific, follow their instructions.
When Constipation Should Be Checked
Occasional constipation is common.
But don’t keep treating repeated constipation only with home remedies.
Get medical advice if constipation keeps coming back, doesn’t improve with treatment, or you have blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent bloating, tummy pain, unusual tiredness or a sudden change in your bowel habits.
Long-term constipation can sometimes lead to stool becoming badly stuck in the rectum, known as faecal impaction, which may need medical treatment.
Why We Made Sitz Bathing Easier at Home
When Deepika Jain and I started The Heal Company in Delhi, one thought stayed with us.
A home-care device should not make an already uncomfortable day more difficult.
That thinking is behind The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.
It gives people a dedicated tub that can be placed on a compatible Western toilet and used for warm-water sitz bathing.
For somebody dealing with constipation-related soreness, hemorrhoids or anal discomfort, that convenience can matter.
But I will always prefer giving you the correct expectation rather than making a big medical promise.
Our Sitz Bath Tub can support comfort. It does not replace proper constipation treatment.
Heal Better. Feel Better.
At The Heal Company, our aim is to design simple devices that can support comfort and healing at home while being used responsibly alongside medical care when medical care is needed.

Health note: A sitz bath may provide comfort and relaxation around the anal area, but it is not a treatment for the underlying cause of constipation. Persistent or concerning constipation should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
