Sitz Bath for Pelvic Pain Syndrome: Relaxation Benefits

By Abhinav Jain, Founder – The Heal Company

Heal Better. Feel Better

Pelvic pain can be strange. Some days it may feel like a dull pressure. On another day it may feel like tightness or an ache around the lower tummy, pelvis or lower back.

While working on sitz bath products at The Heal Company, I have noticed something in the questions people ask us. Many people are not only looking for hygiene. They ask whether warm water can help them relax the pelvic area and feel more comfortable.

I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. We are a Delhi-based brand, and this is one area where I feel we need to keep the answer simple.

A warm sitz bath may help some people relax tight pelvic muscles and temporarily ease discomfort. But it does not treat every cause of pelvic pain.

Let me explain why.

What Is Pelvic Pain Syndrome?

Pelvic pain is pain felt in the lower tummy or pelvic area. It can be sharp, dull, heavy, cramping or feel like pressure. It may come and go or stay for a long time. Long-lasting pelvic pain is generally called chronic pelvic pain when it continues for six months or longer.

The confusing part is that pelvic pain is not one single disease.

It can be linked with the bladder, bowel, reproductive organs, nerves, muscles or pelvic floor. Sometimes more than one thing is causing the pain.

That is why I don’t like saying, “You have pelvic pain, just use a sitz bath.”

Finding the reason behind the pain matters.

Can a Sitz Bath Help Pelvic Pain?

For some types of pelvic pain, warmth can be soothing.

Warm baths are used as a home comfort measure for several conditions involving pelvic discomfort. Warm water can help relax tense pelvic muscles, and medical guidance for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome also lists a warm sitz bath as one way to ease some symptoms.

Think about your shoulders after sitting at a computer for hours.

They can slowly become tight without you even noticing it.

Something similar can happen with muscles around the pelvic floor. When those muscles stay tense, learning to relax them can form part of pelvic pain management. Physical therapy may use stretching, relaxation methods, massage and biofeedback to help with this.

Warm water can be one simple comfort measure alongside proper treatment.

Why Warm Water Can Feel Relaxing

Imagine somebody in Pune who spends most of the day sitting at work. By evening, their pelvic discomfort feels worse.

Or someone in Bengaluru who has already been seeing a doctor for chronic pelvic pain but wants a simple relaxation routine at home.

A warm sitz bath gives the lower pelvic and perineal area exposure to comfortably warm water without needing to fill a full bathtub.

Heat can help muscles relax and may reduce cramping or discomfort in some causes of pelvic pain.

I personally think this is the best way to look at a sitz bath:

Not as a cure. As a simple supportive comfort tool.

Pelvic Floor Relaxation Matters Too

If tight pelvic floor muscles are contributing to pain, simply doing more pelvic floor strengthening exercises may not always be the answer.

Some people actually need help learning how to relax these muscles.

Pelvic floor physical therapy can be used in chronic pelvic pain management. A trained therapist may teach relaxation techniques and work on areas of muscle tightness.

So if your doctor or physiotherapist has given you a pelvic floor plan, follow that plan.

A warm sitz bath can be a comfortable part of your routine if your healthcare professional feels it suits your condition. It shouldn’t replace physiotherapy or another treatment that has been prescribed.

The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual

This is where our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual can make home sitz bathing easier.

Our Manual Sitz Bath Tub is designed to fit over a compatible Western toilet. You add water into the tub and use the connected hand-operated pump to create water flow.

No electric motor is needed in the Manual model.

The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.

We also make an Automatic Sitz Bath Tub, priced at ₹999. The Automatic model uses a powered water-flow system rather than the manual hand pump.

Both are made for people who want an easier way to take a sitz bath at home.

For pelvic pain, the product should be seen as a way to use warm-water supportive care. It isn’t a treatment for the medical condition causing the pain.

How Should the Water Feel?

I prefer keeping sitz bathing simple.

Use clean water at a comfortable temperature. It should feel pleasantly warm, not painfully hot.

Don’t assume hotter water means better results.

And don’t automatically add antiseptic, perfume, essential oils or other ingredients. Sensitive skin around this area may react to products. Some pelvic-health guidance specifically recommends water-only washing and avoiding soaps, bubble bath and antiseptics around sensitive vulval tissue.

If you have a specific diagnosed condition, ask your doctor what water temperature and bathing routine is suitable for you.

A Sitz Bath Cannot Tell You Why You Have Pelvic Pain

This is probably the most useful point in this whole article.

Pelvic pain has many possible causes.

It can be connected with conditions affecting the urinary system, bowel, reproductive organs, pelvic muscles or nerves.

So somebody in Jaipur with pelvic pain may have a completely different problem from somebody in Kochi with similar pain.

A sitz bath might make both people feel comfortable for a while.

But that doesn’t mean their medical problem is the same.

If pain keeps returning or doesn’t go away, get it checked instead of only trying home care.

When Pelvic Pain Needs Medical Attention

Don’t use temporary relief from warm water as a reason to ignore new or worsening symptoms.

Seek medical advice if pelvic pain keeps coming back or doesn’t go away. Symptoms such as difficulty passing urine or stool, blood in urine or stool, unusual discharge or bleeding, fever, or urinary problems can also need prompt assessment. Severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain needs urgent medical attention.

The cause decides the treatment.

Depending on the problem, treatment may involve medicines, pelvic-floor physiotherapy, hormonal treatment, treatment for infection or other specialist care.

Relaxation Is Bigger Than Just Warm Water

Living with pain can also make your body tense.

You hurt, so you tighten your muscles. Tight muscles may add more discomfort. Then you worry about the pain, which can make relaxation even harder.

Breaking that cycle may involve several small things.

Deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help release tension for some people with chronic pelvic pain. Physical therapy can also teach people to recognise and relax tight muscles.

A warm sitz bath can simply become your quiet few minutes in that bigger routine.

Why We Made Our Sitz Bath Simple

When Deepika and I started working on The Heal Company, our idea was not to make healthcare products complicated.

If something is designed for home use, I feel it should be simple to understand and simple to use.

That thinking went into The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.

Place it on a compatible Western toilet, use it as directed, clean it after use and store it for the next time.

Our goal is supportive care that fits more easily into daily life.

Heal Better. Feel Better.
