Heal Better. Feel Better
If you live with inflammatory bowel disease, a bad day may mean much more than stomach pain. Frequent bowel movements, urgency and repeated cleaning can leave the skin around the anal area sore and irritated. Crohn’s disease can also cause problems around this area, including fissures and fistulas.
I am Abhinav Jain, co-founder of The Heal Company with Deepika Jain. While working on our sitz bath products, I have learnt one simple thing from talking to people: sometimes people are not looking for another complicated thing to do. They just want a simple way to feel cleaner and more comfortable.
That is where a warm sitz bath may have a useful role.
But I want to make one thing very clear from the start. A sitz bath does not treat or cure IBD. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis need proper medical care. A sitz bath is mainly supportive care for soreness, irritation and discomfort around the bottom.
What Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease, usually called IBD, is a group of conditions that cause ongoing inflammation in the digestive system. Two major types are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Crohn’s disease commonly causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, abdominal pain and weight loss. It can also cause problems around the anus, such as fissures, fistulas, ulcers and abscesses.
Ulcerative colitis affects the large intestine. Symptoms can include diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, mucus in stool and a sudden or repeated urge to have a bowel movement.
IBD is not the same thing as IBS. IBD involves actual inflammation and needs medical diagnosis and treatment.
Where Can a Sitz Bath Fit Into IBD Care?
Think about someone in Bengaluru having diarrhea many times during an IBD flare. Or somebody in Jaipur who needs to clean the anal area again and again throughout the day.
Even toilet paper itself can start feeling rough on already irritated skin.
Warm-water bathing is one method used to help with anal soreness. Guidance for people with IBD has included warm-water bathing for anal soreness associated with fissures or fistulas, and warm water can also be used as a gentler way of cleaning irritated perianal skin.
This is where I feel a sitz bath can be very practical. Instead of filling a complete bathtub, you can place a sitz bath tub over a compatible Western toilet and soak the bottom area in warm water.
It is simple. And on days when you’re already tired from repeated bathroom trips, simple matters.
What IBD Symptoms May a Sitz Bath Help With?
A sitz bath should be thought of as a comfort and hygiene tool, not an IBD treatment.
It may help soothe soreness or irritation around the anal and perineal area. It can also provide a gentler cleaning option when frequent bowel movements have made wiping uncomfortable.
Crohn’s disease deserves some extra attention here. It can cause anal fissures, perianal fistulas and abscesses. A fistula may cause pain, irritation, swelling, drainage or bleeding.
A warm soak may make the area feel more comfortable, but it cannot close a fistula, drain an abscess safely or control intestinal inflammation.
Those problems need medical care.

How I Would Use a Sitz Bath for General Comfort
If your gastroenterologist or doctor says a sitz bath is suitable for you, keep things simple.
Use comfortably warm water rather than very hot water. The tub should be clean before use. Sit so the sore area can contact the water, then gently pat the skin dry afterward rather than rubbing it.
I would normally stick with plain warm water unless your doctor has specifically told you to add something. With already irritated skin, adding soaps, perfumes or random home remedies can create another problem instead of solving one.
If you have a fistula, abscess, wound, seton, recent operation or another complication around the anal area, ask your treating doctor or colorectal surgeon how they want you to clean and soak the area.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
This is also why we developed The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.
Our manual sitz bath is made to sit over a compatible Western toilet. You fill the tub with water and use the hand-operated pump connected through the pipe to create the water flow.
There is no electric motor in the Manual version.
For someone dealing with anal soreness or irritation, I personally like the idea of having one dedicated tub at home rather than trying to arrange a full bath every time.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
We also have an Automatic Version for ₹899. This version uses a powered motor system rather than the hand pump.
Which type feels easier is a personal choice. The main job is still the same: giving you a convenient way to use a sitz bath at home.
A Small Thing That Can Matter on Difficult Days
When we speak with customers from places like Rohini in Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad or Kolkata, I keep coming back to one point.
Health products should not make an already uncomfortable day harder.
Someone with IBD may already be thinking about food, medicines, bathroom access, work, travel and their next doctor appointment. A simple home-care routine can at least make personal hygiene less troublesome.
That was part of the thinking Deepika and I had while building The Heal Company.
Heal Better. Feel Better.
For us, that line does not mean ignoring medicines. It means making everyday recovery and comfort easier wherever a simple device can genuinely help.
Don’t Use a Sitz Bath as a Replacement for IBD Treatment
This part matters.
Doctors treat ulcerative colitis with medicines that reduce inflammation and help bring about and maintain remission; surgery may sometimes be needed. Crohn’s disease also requires medical management based on where the disease is and how severe it is.
A sitz bath cannot replace those treatments.
If you have persistent rectal bleeding, fever, worsening pain, swelling, pus or drainage around the anus, or symptoms that keep getting worse, talk with your healthcare team. Anorectal fistulas and abscesses can involve infection and need proper evaluation.
And if you haven’t actually been diagnosed with IBD, don’t try to diagnose yourself just because you have diarrhea or rectal discomfort. Many conditions can cause similar symptoms. Doctors may use your history, examination, blood tests, stool tests and endoscopy when investigating ulcerative colitis.
A recent August 2026 patient-education update also highlighted ongoing diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, fatigue, weight loss and bowel urgency as signs that should lead to medical evaluation rather than self-diagnosis.

Why We Made Our Sitz Bath Simple
I don’t think a sitz bath needs to become a complicated medical-looking machine.
You should be able to take it out, place it on the toilet, use it as directed, clean it and store it.
That thinking went into The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual and our Automatic version.
If you’re unsure about our tub, its size, how the Manual and Automatic versions differ, or how it works, you can speak with us.
