Portable vs. Fixed Sitz Bath: Comparison Guide

By Abhinav Jain, Founder – The Heal Company

Heal Better. Feel Better

A customer once asked me, “Abhinav, should I buy a portable sitz bath for my toilet, or is taking a sitz bath in a fixed bathtub better?”

My answer was simple: both can give you a warm-water soak. The bigger difference is where you use it, how much space it needs, and how easy it is to use every day.

I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While developing our sitz bath products, I have seen that people often focus on pumps, nozzles and extra features. But basic things like comfort, storage and bathroom setup can matter much more.

So here is my simple comparison of a portable sitz bath and a fixed bathing setup.

What Is a Portable Sitz Bath?

A portable sitz bath is a small basin designed to sit over a compatible Western toilet.

You can take it out when you need it, place it securely on the toilet and fill it with comfortably warm water. When you’re finished, you clean it, dry it and store it.

Medical guidance describes toilet-mounted sitz baths as shallow bowls or plastic basins that fit over a toilet. Warm-water sitz baths may be used for cleansing and for comfort with some conditions such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

For Indian homes, I feel portability is one of the biggest benefits.

You dont need a bathtub.

What Is a Fixed Sitz Bath?

The word “fixed” can be confusing because there are different bathroom setups.

For this comparison, I am using fixed setup to mean a permanent bathing fixture, mainly a regular bathtub, rather than a removable toilet-mounted sitz bath.

You add a shallow amount of comfortably warm water and sit in the bathtub so the required area is soaked.

Both approaches can provide warm-water bathing. Some medical instructions specifically give patients the choice of a toilet-mounted plastic basin or their bathtub at home.

So a portable tub is not automatically medically better just because it is a separate product.

Portable vs. Fixed: The Big Difference

Think about your normal bathroom.

If you live in an apartment in Rohini in Delhi, Andheri in Mumbai, Indiranagar in Bengaluru or Salt Lake in Kolkata, there is a good chance you have a Western toilet but no bathtub.

That changes the decision immediately.

A portable sitz bath can be placed on the toilet when needed and removed afterward.

A bathtub is permanently part of the bathroom and takes much more space.

This is why I feel portable sitz baths fit the way many Indian homes are designed.

1. Space Needed

This one is easy.

A bathtub needs permanent bathroom space.

A portable sitz bath doesnt.

After using a portable tub, you can clean and dry it and then store it somewhere else.

This may be useful in smaller apartments in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata.

If you already have a bathtub at home, though, you may not need to buy another product just for warm-water soaking.

2. Getting In and Out

This can be a major difference.

Using a bathtub usually means lowering yourself into the tub and getting back out.

A toilet-mounted sitz bath lets you sit at toilet height.

Postpartum guidance, for example, notes that a toilet-mounted sitz tub can be used instead of climbing into a bathtub.

This can make a portable basin more practical for some people.

Still, if someone has poor balance or difficulty sitting and standing, the bathroom setup itself needs attention. A dry floor and properly installed support bars may help reduce fall risk.

3. Water Use

A portable sitz bath is much smaller than a bathtub.

You only need enough water for the intended shallow soak.

A large bathtub naturally has much more capacity.

For someone taking sitz baths regularly, I personally prefer using a smaller dedicated basin rather than preparing a large bathtub every time.

4. Cleaning

Both options need to be kept clean.

With a portable sitz bath, the basin is small and removable. You can empty it, clean it according to the product instructions, rinse it, let it dry and store it.

My preferred routine is:

Use → Empty → Clean → Rinse → Dry → Store.

A bathtub has a much larger surface area.

Whichever option you use, dont ignore cleaning just because the water looked clean.

5. Portability

This is where the portable version clearly gets its name.

You can move it between bathrooms or take it with you when needed.

A fixed bathtub stays where it was installed.

For someone who travels frequently between homes, a portable sitz bath may be easier to manage.

But check the toilet before using it somewhere new because Western toilet shapes and dimensions can vary.

6. Comfort

Dont assume portable automatically means comfortable.

The actual design matters.

Look at the seat width, bowl depth, shape and toilet fit.

This was something Deepika and I thought about when working on The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.

We wanted a wide seating area and a deeper bowl rather than making the product small only for the sake of portability.

If you’re sitting for several minutes, that difference can matter.

The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual

Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual is a portable toilet-mounted sitz bath priced at ₹499.

It is made from durable BPA-free plastic and has a wide seat and deep bowl.

The Manual version also has a hand squeeze pump.

One continuous pipe connects the pump with the water-flow nozzle inside the tub.

When you squeeze the pump by hand, it creates gentle water movement.

There is no electric motor in the Manual version.

For me, that is one of its biggest benefits:

Take it out → Place it securely → Add comfortably warm water → Use it → Clean it → Dry it → Store it.

Simple.

What About The Automatic Version?

We also make The Heal Company Automatic Sitz Bath Tub, priced at ₹999.

This version keeps the portable toilet-mounted idea but adds powered water circulation.

The complete kit contains:

1 Plastic Sitz Bath Tub, 1 Motor Box with 2 connected pipes and nozzles, 1 12V DC Adaptor, 1 Storage Bag and 1 Instruction Manual.

The two nozzles do different jobs.

One draws water from the tub.

The second provides the upward water flow.

The motor circulates the water, so you dont have to keep squeezing a hand pump.

The motor box and adaptor must remain dry.

Portable Manual vs. Portable Automatic

This is another choice people often mix up with portable versus fixed.

Both our Manual and Automatic tubs are removable toilet-mounted products.

The difference is the water-flow system.

Manual – ₹499

You operate the water flow using the hand squeeze pump.

Automatic – ₹999

The motor provides powered water circulation.

I wouldnt tell every customer to buy Automatic just because it has more parts.

If you dont mind using a hand pump, Manual keeps the setup simpler.

If powered circulation is useful to you, Automatic gives you that option.

Which Is Better for Piles?

A warm sitz bath may help soothe mild hemorrhoid pain, swelling and itching. Medical guidance describes both regular warm baths and toilet-mounted sitz baths as options.

The basin itself doesnt cure piles.

Fibre, fluids and avoiding straining can also be part of home care. If symptoms dont improve or you have rectal bleeding, medical assessment may be needed.

So dont buy a portable tub because somebody promises that the tub itself will “remove piles.”

That isnt how I would describe it.

What About Anal Fissures?

Warm-water bathing can also be used for anal fissure comfort. One current hospital guide describes a warm bath or a shallow sitz bowl placed over the toilet as options.

Here again, portability changes convenience rather than turning the bath into a different medical treatment.

If you’re taking several warm-water soaks, a toilet-mounted basin may simply be easier than preparing a bathtub every time.

Postpartum Use

After childbirth, some women may find climbing into a bathtub uncomfortable.

A toilet-mounted sitz bath can provide another way to take a warm-water soak while remaining at normal toilet height.

If you have stitches, an episiotomy or another postpartum concern, follow the instructions given by your maternity team.

Dont assume that adding soap, antiseptic liquid, salt or another ingredient automatically makes the bath better.

Which One Would I Choose for an Indian Home?

If my home already had a bathtub and I was comfortable using it, I wouldnt say I must buy a portable basin.

But for many Indian bathrooms, my personal choice would be a portable toilet-mounted sitz bath.

Why?

It needs less space.

It can be removed after use.

You dont need a bathtub.

You sit at toilet height.

And you can clean, dry and store it when you’re finished.

For regular home use, that makes sense to me.

A Small Story That Stuck With Me

We have heard similar questions from people in Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.

The funny thing is, people sometimes spend a lot of time asking about small product features before checking the biggest thing:

“Will this actually work comfortably in my bathroom?”

That should be one of your first questions.

Check your toilet.

Think about storage.

Think about who will use the product.

Then choose.

Portable vs. Fixed Sitz Bath: My Simple Comparison

A portable toilet-mounted sitz bath makes sense when you want something compact, removable and usable without a bathtub.

A fixed bathtub setup can work when you already have a suitable bathtub and can comfortably get in and out of it.

Neither option becomes medically stronger simply because of its size.

The main purpose is still warm-water soaking.

For many Indian homes, though, portability can make the routine much easier.

A Note From Abhinav & Deepika

Deepika and I started The Heal Company in Delhi to design practical devices that support comfort and home care.

Our approach is pretty simple.

A product should solve a real problem without making the routine harder.

That thinking is behind The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.

Heal Better. Feel Better.

When we talk about devices supporting healing without medicines, we mean supportive care. We dont mean avoiding medicines, surgery or medical treatment when those are needed.
