Heal Better. Feel Better
A customer once called us with a question that sounded very simple:
“Abhinav, if warm water feels good, can I use hotter water so I get more relief?”
My answer was no.
More heat does not mean more benefit. In fact, very hot water can irritate or burn sensitive skin.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While working on The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual, we have heard many questions about how to use a sitz bath at home.
Most people understand the basic idea — add warm water and sit over it. But small mistakes can make the experience uncomfortable or unsafe.
So this guide is about something different.
Instead of only telling you what to do, I want to tell you what NOT to do during a sitz bath.
1. Don’t Use Very Hot Water
This is probably my number one sitz bath safety tip.
A sitz bath should use comfortably warm water, not very hot water.
Hotter water isnt automatically better.
If the skin around the area is already sore or irritated, too much heat can make things worse. You also dont want to risk a burn.
Check the water before sitting.
If it feels too hot, wait or add cooler water.
This matters even more for someone who has reduced skin sensation and may not notice excessive heat quickly.
2. Don’t Add Random Ingredients
I see a lot of home remedies online.
People talk about adding:
- Epsom salt
- Regular salt
- Baking soda
- Essential oils
- Antiseptic liquids
- Apple cider vinegar
- Soap
- Herbal mixtures
My opinion is simple:
Dont turn your sitz bath into a chemistry experiment.
Plain comfortably warm water is often enough for a sitz bath. Some medical instructions may recommend a particular additive for a specific situation, but that is different from adding something because you saw it in a social-media video.
If your doctor has specifically asked you to add something, follow their directions.
Otherwise, plain warm water keeps things simple.
3. Don’t Use Regular Soap in the Water
A sitz bath is not the same as taking a normal bath.
Soap, shower gel, perfume and strongly scented products can irritate sensitive skin.
This can matter even more after childbirth or when the skin is already sore.
Use your sitz bath for its intended purpose.
Clean the tub itself separately according to its care instructions.
4. Don’t Use a Dirty Sitz Bath Tub
This sounds obvious, but it can get missed.
Your sitz bath needs to be cleaned after use.
Dont empty the water and immediately throw the wet tub into a cupboard.
My simple routine is:
Empty → Clean → Rinse → Dry → Store.
Let the tub dry properly before storing it.
I especially dont like storing a wet basin inside a closed bag or cabinet. Moisture sitting there for hours is not what you want from something used for personal hygiene.
5. Don’t Share Your Sitz Bath Without Proper Cleaning
A sitz bath is a personal-care product.
If more than one person in the house needs to use the same basin, clean and dry it properly between users and follow the product’s cleaning directions.
Personally, if a product is being used regularly for intimate personal care, I prefer keeping it for individual use when practical.
6. Don’t Assume Every Tub Fits Every Toilet
This is another common mistake.
Portable sitz bath tubs are generally designed for Western-style toilets, but toilet shapes and dimensions can vary.
Before filling the basin, place it on the toilet and check the fit.
It should sit securely.
Dont try balancing a basin on a toilet where it doesnt fit correctly.
For someone living in Rohini in Delhi, Andheri in Mumbai, Indiranagar in Bengaluru or Salt Lake in Kolkata, the basic safety check is exactly the same:
Check your toilet first.

7. Don’t Sit Down Before Checking Stability
I would do this every time.
Place the tub correctly.
Check that it feels stable.
Then add the water and use it according to its instructions.
If the basin is rocking, slipping or sitting strangely on the toilet, dont simply sit on it and hope it settles.
Fix the setup first.
8. Don’t Leave Water on the Bathroom Floor
Bathrooms can already be slippery.
A sitz bath adds another chance for water to spill.
If water gets onto the floor, wipe it up.
This matters a lot for elderly people or anyone who has trouble with balance.
If somebody normally needs help getting on or off a toilet, a family member or caregiver may need to assist them.
A sitz bath shouldnt create a fall risk.
9. Don’t Sit for Hours
A sitz bath isnt meant to become an all-evening activity.
Many instructions for sitz baths describe relatively short soaking periods, often around 10–20 minutes depending on the person’s medical instructions and reason for use.
Follow the advice given for your situation.
Staying in warm water for much longer does not automatically mean more relief.
10. Don’t Rub the Area Hard Afterward
After a sitz bath, be gentle.
Sensitive or recovering skin doesnt need aggressive rubbing.
Pat the area dry gently with a clean, soft towel or follow the drying instructions given by your healthcare professional.
This can be especially relevant after childbirth, surgery or when the skin is already irritated.
11. Don’t Ignore Pain, Bleeding or Symptoms That Continue
This is one of the biggest mistakes people can make.
A sitz bath is supportive care.
It isnt a diagnosis.
It isnt a cure for every problem.
Warm-water sitz baths may help with comfort around conditions such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures. But if you have significant bleeding, worsening pain, fever, discharge, or symptoms that continue, talk to a qualified healthcare professional.
Dont keep taking sitz baths for weeks while ignoring a problem that needs medical attention.
12. Don’t Think a Sitz Bath Replaces Medicine
At The Heal Company, we talk about designing devices that support healing and comfort without medicines.
But this needs to be understood correctly.
A sitz bath may support comfort and hygiene in suitable situations.
It does not mean you should stop medicine prescribed by your doctor.
It also does not mean you should delay surgery or another treatment that your doctor says you need.
That distinction matters a lot to Deepika and me.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
It is a portable sitz bath designed to fit most standard Western toilets.
We use a durable BPA-free plastic body with a wide comfort seat and deep bowl.
The Manual model uses a hand squeeze pump.
There is one continuous pipe running from the hand pump to the water-flow nozzle inside the tub. You squeeze the pump by hand to create gentle water movement.
There is no electric motor needed.
For me, this keeps the Manual version pretty simple:
Place → Check stability → Add comfortably warm water → Use → Empty → Clean → Dry → Store.
Automatic Sitz Bath Tub – ₹999
We also have The Heal Company Automatic Sitz Bath Tub for ₹999.
Instead of repeatedly squeezing a hand pump, the Automatic version uses powered water circulation.
The kit contains 1 Plastic Sitz Bath Tub, 1 Motor Box with 2 connected pipes and nozzles, 1 12V DC Adaptor, 1 Storage Bag and 1 Instruction Manual.
One nozzle draws water from the basin.
The second provides the upward water flow.
And here comes an extra safety point:
Don’t Let the Motor Box or Adaptor Get Wet
The motor system operates using the supplied 12V DC adaptor, but the motor box and adaptor must be kept dry.
Dont put the motor box into the water.
Dont place the adaptor where it can fall into water.
Use the Automatic version only according to the supplied instructions.
If water gets inside an electrical component, disconnect it safely and dont continue using it until the issue has been dealt with according to the product instructions.
Safety After Childbirth
We hear from women from different cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru who are looking at sitz baths for postpartum care.
After childbirth, the situation can be different for each woman.
There may be soreness, stitches or an episiotomy.
Dont automatically add salt, antiseptic liquid or another ingredient.
Follow the instructions given by your maternity team.
A sitz bath can be part of a comfort routine. It doesnt replace postpartum medical care.
Safety for Elderly Users
For an elderly person, I care less about fancy features and more about stability.
Check the toilet fit.
Keep the floor dry.
Keep commonly used items within easy reach.
If the person feels dizzy, weak or unsteady, they should not use the bathroom setup alone.
A manual pump also needs hand movement. If squeezing it is difficult, the person doesnt have to use the pump continuously. The basic warm-water soak is the main part of a sitz bath.

My Simple Sitz Bath Safety Rule
When customers ask me how to make a sitz bath safer, I normally come back to four simple things:
Warm, not hot.
Clean, not dirty.
Stable, not wobbly.
Simple, not filled with random ingredients.
You dont need to make a sitz bath complicated.
A Note From Abhinav & Deepika
Deepika and I founded The Heal Company in Delhi with the idea of designing practical products that can support comfort and home care.
One thing we have learnt is that giving somebody a product isnt enough.
They should also understand how to use it properly.
That is why I feel safety information belongs right next to product information.
