Heal Better. Feel Better
A customer once asked me a very simple question: “I clean myself after a sitz bath, but do I also need to clean the tub every time?”
My answer was yes.
A sitz bath is meant to give warm-water comfort and help keep a sensitive area clean. So starting with a dirty tub or storing it while it is still wet just doesnt make much sense.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While working on The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual, I have seen that people have lots of questions about the actual bath, but much fewer people ask about hygiene before and after it.
So I made this simple checklist.
The basic idea is:
Clean tub → Clean hands → Fresh warm water → Sitz bath → Pat yourself dry → Clean tub → Dry tub → Store it.
That little routine can make sitz bath use much easier and cleaner.
What Is Sitz Bath Hygiene?
Sitz bath hygiene simply means keeping your hands, the sitz bath tub, the water and your skin clean before and after each use.
An Indian government hospital nursing manual says a portable sitz bath basin should be cleaned before use and cleaned again afterward according to the manufacturer’s directions. It also includes hand hygiene as part of the procedure.
This is exactly why I dont see cleaning as an optional extra.
It is part of using a reusable sitz bath properly.
Before Your Sitz Bath: Hygiene Checklist
1. Wash Your Hands
Start by washing your hands properly.
You will be touching the tub, water, pipe and possibly a sensitive area of your body. Starting with clean hands is a very simple habit.
This matters even more after surgery, childbirth or when there is already irritated or damaged skin.
2. Check That Your Sitz Bath Is Clean
Before putting The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual on your Western toilet, look inside it.
Is there any old water left?
Is there dust?
Does the tub look clean?
Is the pipe clean?
If something doesnt look right, clean it before using it.
Hospital sitz-bath procedure also starts with cleaning the portable basin before filling it with water.
I think this is one of the easiest habits to build: never fill first and inspect later.
3. Place the Tub Properly
Put the sitz bath securely on a compatible Western toilet.
Check that it is sitting properly before adding water and before you sit down.
You dont want to discover that the tub is unstable after you are already sitting on it.
If you have poor balance, weakness, or have recently had an operation, getting help from another person may be safer. The Indian nursing manual specifically recommends assistance and monitoring for people who are weak or unsteady.
4. Use Fresh Warm Water
Use fresh water for every bath.
Dont save yesterday’s water. Dont reuse water that somebody else has used.
A hospital patient guide specifically recommends fresh water for each sitz bath and cleaning the toilet-mounted bath after every use.
The water should feel comfortably warm, not painfully hot.
Very hot water can burn sensitive skin. Current clinical guidance describes warm/lukewarm water rather than hot water and gives roughly 37°C to 39°C in one specific clinical sitz-bath protocol.
You dont need to chase an exact temperature for ordinary home use. Comfortable warm water is the simple rule, unless your doctor has given you specific instructions.
5. Don’t Randomly Add Things to the Water
This is something I have said many times.
People think adding more things must make the sitz bath more powerful.
Salt. Antiseptic. Oil. Soap. Epsom salt. Baking soda.
But different medical conditions have different instructions.
For ordinary perianal care, some medical guidance specifically recommends plain warm water and says not to add Epsom salts or bath oils.
There are special medical situations where a doctor may prescribe or recommend an additive. That is different.
So my simple rule is:
If your doctor has not asked you to add something, dont assume you need it.

During the Sitz Bath
Now comes the easy part.
Sit comfortably and use the bath according to your doctor’s advice or the instructions supplied with your product.
A sitz bath is commonly used for comfort and hygiene around the perineal and anal area. The VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital nursing manual lists purposes including cleansing, relaxation, circulation, healing support and relief from discomfort.
But remember that a sitz bath is supportive care.
It doesn’t cure every cause of piles, fissures, postpartum pain or another medical problem. Medicine, medical examination or surgery may still be needed depending on the condition.
After Your Sitz Bath: Hygiene Checklist
1. Stand Up Carefully
Dont suddenly jump up after sitting in warm water.
Take your time.
This becomes more important if you feel weak, dizzy or unsteady. Clinical sitz-bath procedure specifically tells healthcare staff to watch vulnerable patients for dizziness or weakness.
2. Pat Yourself Dry — Don’t Rub
This is one of my biggest hygiene tips.
Take a clean, soft towel and gently pat the wet area.
Dont scrub.
Dont rub hard.
Medical guidance for perianal skin care recommends gentle patting with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
Think of sensitive skin like very soft fabric. Rough handling isnt going to make it happier.
3. Follow Your Doctor’s Dressing Instructions
If you have recently had rectal surgery, childbirth stitches or another procedure, you may have a dressing or medicine to apply.
Follow the instructions given by your doctor.
The Indian nursing procedure includes drying the patient and reapplying dressings when required.
Dont copy somebody else’s medical routine from social media simply because they are also using a sitz bath.
4. Throw Away the Used Water
Once you are finished, empty the tub.
Dont leave dirty bath water sitting there for hours.
Dont reuse it later.
Fresh water should be used for your next bath.
5. Clean Your Sitz Bath After Every Use
This is the part people sometimes skip.
Clean your reusable sitz bath after each use.
A 2025 clinical guideline says reusable sitz baths should be cleaned with soap and water after each use. The Indian hospital nursing manual says the portable tub should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s directions after use.
For your own product, follow its cleaning instructions because materials and components can differ.
And remember the pipe and other water-contact components too.
6. Let the Tub Dry Before Storing It
After cleaning, drain the water and let the product dry.
Dont immediately close a wet sitz bath inside a cupboard or bag.
I prefer the simple routine:
Wash → Drain → Dry → Store.
It takes very little extra effort.
For the Automatic version, keep the electrical motor/control components dry and follow the supplied electrical-care instructions. Never immerse electrical parts in water.
Your 10-Second Sitz Bath Hygiene Checklist
Here is the version you can actually remember:
BEFORE: Wash hands → Check tub → Clean if needed → Fit securely → Add fresh warm water.
AFTER: Pat skin dry → Empty water → Clean tub → Drain → Dry → Store → Wash hands.
That is it.
No complicated routine.

A Note From Us
Deepika and I started The Heal Company around a simple idea: create useful devices that can support comfort and healing at home.
But a device should never be presented as a replacement for medical care when medical treatment is needed.
If pain keeps getting worse, you develop fever, unusual discharge, increasing swelling or bleeding, or you are recovering from surgery and something doesnt seem right, speak with your doctor.
For us, a sitz bath is a supportive-care device, not a magic cure.
And good hygiene is part of using it properly.
