How to Clean and Maintain Your Sitz Bath Tub

By Abhinav Jain, Founder – The Heal Company

Heal Better. Feel Better

A customer once asked me a very simple question after buying a sitz bath:

“I clean myself using the tub, but who is cleaning the tub?”

It sounds funny, but it is actually a very good question.

I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company, along with Deepika Jain. At The Heal Company in Delhi, we talk a lot about how to use a sitz bath. But cleaning it after use matters too.

A sitz bath comes in contact with a sensitive area of your body. Water also sits inside the bowl, pipe and nozzle. So my simple rule is: use it, empty it, clean it, dry it and then store it.

Hospital guidance in India also says a portable sitz bath basin should be cleaned before use and cleaned after use according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Here is how I suggest caring for The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual at home.

Why Should You Clean a Sitz Bath After Every Use?

Think about your drinking glass.

You would not drink from the same used glass for days without washing it. Your sitz bath also deserves regular cleaning.

After a sitz bath, some water can remain inside the bowl or around the nozzle. Moisture can also stay inside the pipe.

Cleaning helps remove residue and keeps the product ready for your next use.

This matters even more when somebody is using a sitz bath for hemorrhoids, fissures, postpartum care, or after a procedure on the advice of their doctor.

The Indian nursing procedure manual from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital says the portable sitz bath basin should be cleaned as part of the sitz bath procedure. It also recommends hand hygiene after the procedure.

How to Clean Your Sitz Bath Tub After Use

For normal everyday maintenance, you dont need to make cleaning complicated.

Start by throwing away all the used water.

Rinse the bowl properly with clean water. Pay attention to the centre area, edges and places where water may collect.

For our product, follow the cleaning directions supplied with the product. If using a mild cleaning product, rinse it away fully so residue is not left where your skin will later come in contact.

After rinsing, allow the tub to dry properly.

That last part gets missed alot.

People sometimes wash the tub and immediately put it inside a closed cupboard while it is still wet. I dont recommend doing that.

Clean and dry is better than clean and wet.

Don’t Forget the Manual Pump and Pipe

The The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual includes a hand pump and connected pipe.

This part also needs care.

After using the product, don’t only look at the big white bowl. Check the pipe and nozzle area as well.

Drain the remaining water from the system as directed in the product instructions. Keep the external parts clean and let them dry before storage.

Do not aggressively pull, twist or bend the pipe while cleaning it. A pipe may look like a small part, but without a proper connection the water-flow feature will not work as intended.

This is something I tell customers: clean gently, don’t fight with the product.

Cleaning Before Your Next Sitz Bath

Even if you cleaned the tub after your previous use, have a quick look before using it again.

Is there dust inside?

Is the tub fully clean?

Has anything fallen inside while it was stored?

Does the pipe look properly connected?

It takes less than a minute to check.

The Indian hospital nursing procedure for sitz baths starts by cleaning the portable basin before filling it with warm water.

That is a good habit for home use too.

What About Very Strong Cleaners?

More chemical does not always mean more clean.

For a product that touches sensitive skin, I would not experiment with random strong chemicals or mix different household cleaning products together.

Follow the product cleaning directions and rinse the tub thoroughly.

India’s national infection-prevention guidelines discuss cleaning as a process that removes unwanted material and also give different procedures for cleaning and disinfection in healthcare settings. A home sitz bath, though, should be maintained according to its manufacturer’s directions rather than copying hospital chemical-disinfection methods yourself.

If your doctor has asked you to follow a special cleaning method because of surgery, infection or another medical reason, follow their instructions.

Drying Your Sitz Bath Is Part of Cleaning

This is probably the most boring part of this article.

It is also one of the easiest habits to follow.

After rinsing your sitz bath, let the remaining water drain away. Allow the tub and its parts to dry before you put everything away.

Check places where small drops can hide, such as around the nozzle and pipe connection.

We designed The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual with home use in mind. Once cleaned and dried, you can keep it stored in a clean place until its next use.

I would avoid leaving it on a dirty bathroom floor.

How Should You Store a Sitz Bath Tub?

A clean bathroom shelf, suitable hook or another dry storage space can work depending on your setup.

The basic idea is very simple:

Clean place + dry product + careful storage.

If somebody in Rohini uses their sitz bath twice daily, they may keep it somewhere easy to reach.

A person in Pune who only needs it during recovery may clean and dry it before putting it away for longer.

Someone in Bengaluru or Kolkata may have a bathroom that stays humid for longer. In that case, giving the tub enough time to dry before storage becomes even more useful.

Different homes are different. The cleaning habit stays almost the same.

Can Family Members Share One Sitz Bath?

Because a sitz bath is used around intimate areas, my preference is to treat it as a personal-use hygiene product rather than casually sharing the same unit between several people.

If sharing has been specifically recommended or is unavoidable in a care setting, follow the cleaning and disinfection instructions given by the healthcare professional or facility.

For normal home use, having your own sitz bath also makes the routine simpler.

Check Your Sitz Bath From Time to Time

Maintenance isn’t only washing.

Every few uses, take a proper look at your product.

Check whether the bowl has any damage. Look at the pipe and connections. Check that the nozzle is sitting properly and the hand pump is working normally.

If something looks damaged, don’t keep forcing it.

For The Heal Company customers, this is also where our support becomes useful. You can send us a photo or video and explain what is happening.

The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual

Our The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual is designed for use with a compatible Western toilet.

The Manual version comes with a hand-operated pump and pipe system, so you can create water flow manually without needing an electric motor.

Manual Version: ₹499

For people who prefer powered water movement, we also have:

Automatic Version: ₹999

The Automatic model needs different care around its electrical components. The motor unit and electrical parts must be kept dry and must never be immersed in water. Disconnect the power before cleaning the non-electrical tub parts, and follow the supplied product instructions.

If water gets into an electrical component, don’t operate it until it has been dealt with according to the product safety instructions.

A Small Habit That Makes a Big Difference

When Deepika Jain and I work on products at The Heal Company, I keep coming back to one thought.

A health-care device should not become another complicated job in your day.

With a sitz bath, I feel the best routine is also the easiest one to remember:

Use → Empty → Rinse/Clean → Dry → Store.

Don’t leave yesterday’s water sitting inside.

Don’t throw a wet tub into a closed cupboard.

Don’t ignore the pipe and nozzle.

And don’t wait until the tub looks dirty before you clean it.

A few minutes after each use is much easier than dealing with a badly maintained product later.
