Heal Better. Feel Better
One question people ask us at The Heal Company is surprisingly simple:
“Can I put baking soda in my sitz bath, and if yes, how much?”
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company, along with Deepika Jain. We are a Delhi-based brand working on simple devices that support comfort and home care.
When I started reading about baking soda sitz baths, one thing became clear. There is no reason to make the mixture very strong. And baking soda is not needed in every sitz bath.
Plain warm water remains a perfectly good choice. In some specific situations, though, healthcare providers do recommend a small measured amount of baking soda in a sitz bath.
So let us clear up the measurements.
What Is Baking Soda?
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate.
And please dont confuse it with baking powder. They are different products. Medical guidance about sodium bicarbonate baths specifically makes this distinction.
Baking soda is sometimes added to bath water for certain kinds of skin irritation, itching or burning. But that doesn’t mean it can treat every condition that causes discomfort around the anal or genital area.
I look at it as an optional bath ingredient, not a medicine.
How Much Baking Soda Should You Add to a Sitz Bath?
Here is where we have some useful medical guidance.
One hospital’s vulvar skin-care instructions recommend 1 to 2 teaspoons of baking soda in a sitz bath for itching and burning. The same guidance recommends soaking for about 10 minutes.
Another NHS hospital guide for people receiving pelvic radiotherapy gives a different recipe: fill a toilet sitz bath about two-thirds full with warm water and add 1 tablespoon of baking soda, then soak for 10–15 minutes.
So there isn’t one measurement that fits every medical situation.
A useful way to remember it
Some clinical instructions use 1–2 teaspoons. Other condition-specific instructions use 1 tablespoon.
That does not mean you should automatically choose the larger amount.
The amount can depend on why you’re using the sitz bath and the volume of water. If your doctor has given you a measurement, use that measurement.
Don’t Copy a Full-Bathtub Measurement
This mistake is easy to make.
A sitz bath tub holds far less water than a normal bathtub.
For example, medical guidance for certain skin conditions describes adding several tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate to a regular bath. That amount is intended for a much larger volume of water.
So dont read:
“4 tablespoons for a bath”
and pour 4 tablespoons into a small toilet sitz bath.
The water volumes are completely different.
How to Prepare a Baking Soda Sitz Bath
If baking soda has been recommended for your situation, start with a clean sitz bath.
Fill the tub with comfortably warm water. It should feel pleasant against your skin, not hot.
Measure the recommended amount of baking soda/sodium bicarbonate and put it into the water.
Mix the water gently until the powder has dissolved.
Then sit in the bath for the time advised for your situation. Medical instructions commonly use around 10 to 15 minutes for baking-soda sitz baths.
When finished, get up carefully and gently pat the area dry with a clean, soft towel. Avoid aggressive rubbing.
Throw away the water and clean the sitz bath after use.
Fresh water and a freshly prepared mixture should be used the next time.

What Are the Possible Benefits?
This part needs a little care because the internet makes some very big claims about baking soda.
Medical guidance supports baking-soda soaks for some specific kinds of itching, burning and skin irritation.
Sodium bicarbonate baths are also used for certain skin conditions to help with itching and irritation, but that guidance is for those specific conditions and isn’t proof that baking soda treats hemorrhoids, fissures or every other problem people use sitz baths for.
So I would not tell a The Heal Company customer:
“Add baking soda and you will heal faster.”
We dont have good reason to make that promise.
A better way of saying it is:
A baking soda soak may provide comfort in certain situations when it is recommended for that condition.
Baking Soda vs Plain Warm Water
People sometimes think a sitz bath needs an ingredient before it can work.
It doesn’t.
A sitz bath is, at its simplest, a shallow warm-water bath for the perineal area. Sitz baths themselves are used for cleansing and may provide relief from pain or itching.
That means plain warm water can still be your starting point.
This is especially useful if you dont know whether your skin will react to an additive.
I would rather keep the water simple than start mixing baking soda, salt, oils, antiseptics and other things together.
When Should You Ask Your Doctor First?
If you have had surgery, have stitches, an open wound, significant bleeding, an infection, severe pain or symptoms that are getting worse, ask your healthcare professional what should go into your sitz bath.
The same goes for postpartum recovery.
Warm sitz baths themselves are commonly included in postpartum-care guidance, but the exact wound-care instructions can depend on what happened during childbirth.
If your surgeon or doctor says plain water only, use plain water.
If they prescribe a particular mixture, follow that.
A Google search cannot see your wound or know your medical history.
What About Hemorrhoids and Fissures?
Many people buying The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual use sitz baths because they are dealing with discomfort from piles or fissures.
The warm-water soak is the main part I would focus on.
Baking soda should not be presented as a cure for hemorrhoids or anal fissures.
If you want to add it because of itching, irritation or another symptom, speak with your doctor if you are unsure why that symptom is happening.
Sometimes two problems can feel very similar but need different treatment.

My Simple Baking Soda Rule
When Deepika and I talk to customers, I like keeping things easy.
If you are planning a baking soda sitz bath, remember these four points:
Use baking soda, not baking powder.
Follow the measurement recommended for your condition.
Some medical sitz-bath instructions use 1–2 teaspoons, while other condition-specific guidance uses 1 tablespoon.
When no additive has been recommended, plain comfortably warm water is still an option.
And please dont keep adding extra baking soda hoping that it will work faster.
Your skin is not a kitchen sink that needs stronger cleaning.
Keep it gentle.
