Heal Better. Feel Better
You have piles. The area is swollen and hurting. Someone tells you to sit in warm water. But another person says cold water is better for swelling.
Now you are confused.
Should you use warm water or cold water? What if you use the wrong one? Can cold water make piles worse? And does warm water really help with healing?
These are the kind of questions I feel people should ask before trying anything at home.
I am Abhinav Jain, co-founder of The Heal Company, a Delhi-based brand started by me and Deepika Jain. We design products that make everyday healing care easier, without depending on medicines for every small discomfort.
While working on our Sitz Bath Tub, I kept thinking about one simple thing. People spend time choosing a tub, but the water they put inside it matters just as much.
So let’s talk about the difference between cold and warm sitz baths.
Why Does Water Temperature Matter?
Think about what happens when you hurt your ankle.
You may use a cold pack to ease swelling.
But when your muscles feel tight after a long day, a warm bath may feel better.
The same idea helps explain why people talk about cold and warm water for discomfort around the anus.
Cold can temporarily numb an area and may reduce swelling.
Warm water may help relax tight muscles and soothe soreness.
But there is one big difference.
Warm sitz baths are commonly recommended for piles and anal fissures. Cold-water sitz baths have much less medical research behind them.
So I would not treat both as equally proven treatments.
When Is a Warm Sitz Bath Better?
Suppose you have just passed hard stool.
The area around your anus feels sore. Maybe there is a burning feeling. Sitting on a chair is uncomfortable.
This is when a warm sitz bath may help.
Warm water can relax the muscles around the anus. It may also reduce the feeling of tightness and irritation.
For people with an anal fissure, this can be useful because the anal muscles may go into spasm, causing pain.
Warm-water soaking is also commonly suggested for hemorrhoid discomfort and some types of recovery after childbirth or anal surgery.
But if you have recently had surgery or stitches, follow your doctor’s instructions about when to start soaking.
A sitz bath can support comfort. It does not replace treatment for the underlying condition.
Can Cold Water Help With Piles?
Cold can help numb discomfort for a short time.
That is why doctors sometimes suggest a cold compress or an ice pack wrapped in cloth for swollen hemorrhoids.
But sitting in a basin full of cold water is not quite the same thing.
A cold sitz bath may feel uncomfortable. It can also make some people tense the muscles around the anus instead of relaxing them.
There is not enough strong evidence to say that cold-water soaking works better than warm-water soaking for piles.
My view is simple.
If your main problem is soreness or tightness, I would generally choose a warm sitz bath.
If you have a swollen, painful external hemorrhoid and want short-term cooling, a wrapped cold pack may be a more practical option than sitting in cold water.
Never put ice directly on the skin.
And don’t use very cold water for a long time.

Warm vs. Cold Sitz Bath: What’s the Difference?
| Warm sitz bath | Cold sitz bath | |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Comfortably warm | Cool or cold |
| Main effect | May soothe soreness and relax muscles | May temporarily numb discomfort |
| Common use | Piles, fissures and some recovery care | Less established for these conditions |
| Typical duration | Around 10–15 minutes, if advised | No well-established standard for cold soaking |
| Main concern | Burns from hot water | Excessive cooling and discomfort |
| My preference | Usually the better starting option | Only if a healthcare professional advises it |
I would also say something else.
A sitz bath is not a competition between hot and cold.
The aim is to feel better safely.
If your doctor has suggested a particular temperature for your condition, follow that advice.
What About Anal Fissures?
An anal fissure is a small tear in the skin around the anus.
It can cause sharp pain during or after passing stool.
Some people describe it as a cutting or burning feeling.
For fissures, warm water is generally preferred because it may help relax the anal sphincter muscles.
Cold water may not give the same relaxing effect.
If you live in Salt Lake, Kolkata, or Malviya Nagar, Jaipur, and are dealing with fissure pain, don’t assume soaking alone will fix it.
Hard stool can keep reopening the tear.
Keeping stools soft and following medical advice is very important.
Some fissures need prescription creams or other treatment.
Is Warm Water Always Safe?
No. Very hot water can burn sensitive skin.
And the area around your anus and private parts is particularly delicate.
I would suggest checking the water temperature before sitting.
The water should feel pleasantly warm, never burning hot.
You don’t need boiling water or steam.
Use clean water and soak for around 10 to 15 minutes, or for the time advised by your doctor.
If you have reduced sensation in your skin, ask someone to help check the temperature.
Afterwards, gently pat the area dry.
Don’t rub hard with a towel.
Also, avoid adding soap, antiseptic liquid, essential oils or random powders unless a healthcare professional has recommended them.
Plain warm water is usually enough.
Why We Made The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
Let me tell you something about the way we thought about this product.
In India, many people don’t have a bathtub at home.
Whether somebody lives in Rohini, Delhi, Wakad, Pune, or Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, a bathroom may have a Western toilet but no separate bathing tub.
So how do you take a sitz bath without sitting in a bucket?
That is one of the problems we wanted to address.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual is a toilet-mounted sitz bath basin designed for compatible Western toilets.
It has a wide seat, a deep bowl and a hand-operated water pump.
The grey hand pump connects to a nozzle inside the tub through a grey pipe.
When you squeeze the pump, water moves through the nozzle.
No motor is required.
The price is ₹499.
I like the Manual version because it is simple to operate. You control the water movement yourself.
For warm-water soaking at home, it can be a useful option when your toilet is compatible.
One thing I always want people to check is toilet fit. Western toilet seats come in different shapes and sizes.
Don’t assume every tub will fit every toilet.
What About Our Automatic Sitz Bath Tub?
We also make The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Automatic, priced at ₹999.
This version uses a small motor for water circulation.
You don’t have to keep squeezing a hand pump.
The kit includes the sitz bath tub, motor unit with connected pipes and nozzles, 12V DC adaptor, storage bag and instruction manual.
The motor unit and adaptor must remain dry.
Does the Automatic version heal piles faster?
I would not make that claim.
The difference between Manual and Automatic is mainly convenience.
Both are intended for sitz bath use, not as a replacement for medical treatment.
Can You Use Warm and Cold Treatment on the Same Day?
In some cases, yes, but that doesn’t mean you should alternate between hot and cold water without a reason.
For example, a doctor may suggest warm sitz baths for soreness and a wrapped cold pack for temporary swelling relief.
These are two different methods.
I would avoid rapidly switching between very hot and icy water.
And if you have diabetes-related reduced skin sensation, poor circulation, a healing wound or recent surgery, ask your healthcare professional before trying cold or heat treatment.

One More Thing: Don’t Forget Why You Have Pain
If you have piles because you keep straining during bowel movements, warm water alone won’t solve the problem.
If you have a fissure caused by hard stool, you need to address constipation too.
Eat enough fibre. Drink water regularly. Don’t hold back when you need to pass stool.
And please don’t spend 20 minutes sitting on the toilet using your phone.
I feel these simple habits get ignored because people want quick relief.
A sitz bath may help you feel comfortable today.
But changing your bowel habits may help reduce the irritation that keeps coming back.
When Should You See a Doctor?
If you have bleeding from your anus, don’t automatically assume it is piles.
Other conditions can cause bleeding too.
Get medical advice if you have severe pain, fever, worsening swelling, unusual discharge or symptoms that don’t improve.
Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, dizziness or severe pain with fever.
You can read more about hemorrhoids and their treatment from the NHS and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
So, Cold or Warm? What Would I Choose?
For most people looking for relief from piles-related soreness or anal fissure discomfort, I would start with a comfortably warm sitz bath, provided their doctor has not advised otherwise.
For a swollen external hemorrhoid, a short application of a wrapped cold pack may also help with temporary discomfort.
But I would not recommend an ice-cold sitz bath as a routine treatment without medical guidance.
The water should help you feel comfortable, not create another problem.
At The Heal Company, Deepika and I want to make home care easier and more affordable. We design products to support comfort and recovery, not to replace medicines or doctors when they are needed.
