Heal Better. Feel Better
Should you use warm water or ice for piles? Which one gives better relief? And can you use both?
Imagine you wake up in the morning, go to the toilet and suddenly feel pain around your anus. You try sitting on a chair, but it hurts. Even walking feels uncomfortable.
You search Google for piles pain relief.
One website says use warm water. Another says apply ice.
Now you’re confused. Should you make the area warm or cold?
Hi, I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. We are a Delhi-based brand working on products that make home care simple and comfortable.
While developing The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual, I realised something. People often know that a sitz bath helps with piles discomfort, but many dont understand how it is different from using an ice pack.
So today, lets talk about both.
A sitz bath can help soothe pain, itching and tight muscles. An ice pack may help with swelling and give short-term pain relief. Both work differently, and neither is a cure for hemorrhoids.
First, Why Do Hemorrhoids Hurt?
Hemorrhoids, also called piles, are swollen veins inside or around your anus.
Some people feel itching. Some feel burning or pain. Others notice a lump near the anus or blood after passing stool.
When you are constipated and push hard, it puts more pressure on these veins.
And if an external hemorrhoid becomes swollen or develops a blood clot, the pain can be quite strong.
This is why home care is not just about warm or cold water. You also need to manage constipation and avoid straining.
What Does a Sitz Bath Do for Hemorrhoids?
A sitz bath is a shallow warm-water bath for your buttocks and the area around your anus.
You can take it in a bathtub or use a small plastic sitz bath basin that sits over a compatible Western toilet.
Warm water may help relax the muscles around your anus. It can also soothe itching, soreness and pain.
Think of how warm water feels on tired feet after a long day. It may not fix the cause of pain, but it can make you feel comfortable.
A sitz bath works on a similar idea.
When Should You Use a Sitz Bath?
I would consider a warm sitz bath when:
You feel soreness after passing stool.
Your piles are causing itching or irritation.
The muscles around your anus feel tight.
You want to clean the area without rubbing.
Your doctor has advised warm soaking after a procedure.
For most people, sitting in comfortably warm water for around 10–15 minutes is a common routine.
But dont use very hot water. Hot water can burn or irritate the skin.
And please remember, sitting longer does not mean you will heal faster.
What Does an Ice Pack Do for Piles?
An ice pack is different.
Cold temporarily reduces feeling in the skin and may help with swelling.
Suppose you have a swollen external hemorrhoid. The area feels tender and painful when you sit.
A wrapped cold pack may give some short-term comfort.
But there is one mistake people should never make.
Dont put ice directly on your anus.
The skin is sensitive. Direct ice can damage it.
Wrap the cold pack in a clean, soft towel and apply it gently for around 5–10 minutes. Remove it sooner if you feel burning, numbness or more pain.
Never fall asleep with an ice pack against your skin.
When Should You Use an Ice Pack?
Cold may be useful when:
You have swelling around an external hemorrhoid.
The area feels tender.
You want temporary pain relief.
Sitting causes discomfort because of swelling.
If you suddenly develop a very painful, hard lump, see a doctor promptly. It could be a blood clot inside an external hemorrhoid.
An ice pack may ease pain, but it cannot remove that clot.

Sitz Bath vs. Ice Pack: Which Is Better?
Sitz Bath | Ice Pack |
|---|---|
Uses comfortably warm water | Uses cold |
May relax tight muscles | Temporarily numbs the area |
Helps soothe itching and soreness | May reduce swelling |
Usually 10–15 minutes | Usually 5–10 minutes |
Needs a basin or bathtub | Needs a cold pack and towel |
Useful for general piles discomfort | Useful for swollen external piles |
So which one should you choose?
For itching, soreness and muscle tightness, I would prefer a warm sitz bath. For swelling, a wrapped ice pack may be useful.
But every person’s symptoms are different.
Neither method has been proven better for every case of hemorrhoids.
Can You Use Both on the Same Day?
Yes, some people use both at different times.
For example, somebody living in Jaipur may take a warm sitz bath after passing stool because the area feels sore.
Later, if an external hemorrhoid feels swollen, they may use a wrapped cold pack.
There is no need to quickly switch between very hot and very cold temperatures.
Keep both gentle.
And if your doctor has given you a care plan, follow that.
Why I Prefer a Toilet Sitz Bath Over a Full Bathtub
Let me explain something from a product design point of view.
Think about a family living in Rohini, Delhi, Andheri, Mumbai, or Whitefield, Bengaluru.
Most people dont want to fill a complete bathtub just to soak a small part of their body.
Some homes dont even have bathtubs.
This is where a toilet-mounted sitz bath makes sense.
You place a small basin over a compatible Western toilet, add warm water and sit comfortably.
You use less water, and cleaning the basin is usually easier than cleaning a full bathtub.
For me, this is the biggest practical benefit.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
At The Heal Company, we designed our Manual Sitz Bath Tub to make warm-water soaking simple at home.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual costs ₹499.
It is a white plastic basin with a wide comfort seat and deep bowl.
The product has one grey hand squeeze pump connected through one continuous grey pipe to a nozzle inside the tub.
When you squeeze the pump, water moves through the nozzle.
There is no motor and no electricity required.
The tub is designed for compatible Western toilets. Since toilet shapes and sizes are different, check the fit before buying.
I personally like the Manual version because it is simple to operate and affordable.
And you dont need to keep filling a large bathtub every time you want to soak.
What About Our Automatic Sitz Bath Tub?
We also make The Heal Company Automatic Sitz Bath Tub, priced at ₹999.
The Automatic version uses a small motor for water circulation.
It comes with a plastic sitz bath tub, motor box with two connected pipes and nozzles, 12V DC adaptor, storage bag and instruction manual.
One nozzle draws water from the tub, while the other provides upward water flow.
The motor box and adaptor must stay dry.
If you dont want to repeatedly squeeze a hand pump, the Automatic version may be more convenient.
But I would never say Automatic heals piles faster than Manual. There is no good evidence for that claim.
Both products are meant to make warm-water sitz bathing easier.
What Else Should You Do for Piles Relief?
This is something I feel people often ignore.
You may take a sitz bath every day, but if you keep straining while passing stool, your problem may continue.
Try eating more fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Drink enough water.
Dont sit on the toilet for a long time scrolling through your phone.
And avoid pushing too hard.
These small habits can help reduce constipation and pressure on hemorrhoids.
When Should You Stop Home Treatment?
If you have rectal bleeding, dont assume it is always piles.
See a doctor if bleeding occurs, pain is severe, or symptoms are not improving after about a week of home care.
Get urgent help if you have heavy bleeding, fainting, fever or rapidly worsening pain and swelling.
A sitz bath or ice pack can help with comfort, but it should not delay medical treatment.

My Final Advice: Warm or Cold?
If you ask me, I would not choose one method for everybody.
Use a warm sitz bath for general soreness, itching and tightness. Use a wrapped ice pack when swelling is your main concern.
You can use both at different times if they feel comfortable.
And remember, the goal is not just to reduce pain for a few minutes. It is also to avoid constipation, reduce straining and get proper medical care when needed.
