Heal Better. Feel Better
A person once asked me a nice question about sitz baths:
“Can I put chamomile in the water? It feels natural, so will it make the sitz bath more soothing?”
I could understand why they asked. Chamomile tea is found in many homes. It has a soft smell, people connect it with relaxation, and herbal products often sound gentle.
But when something is going near already sore or sensitive skin, natural does not always mean better or safer.
I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company along with Deepika Jain. While working around sitz bath products, I have seen people add salt, baking soda, oils, herbs and many other things into warm water.
My view is simple.
Plain warm water should normally be your starting point. Chamomile is an optional herbal addition, not something every sitz bath needs.
Let me explain why.
What Is a Chamomile Sitz Bath?
A sitz bath is a shallow warm-water bath used around the bottom and perineal area.
A chamomile sitz bath means chamomile has been added to this water, usually in the form of an infusion or another chamomile preparation.
People use chamomile because it has a long history as a herbal remedy. Research has also looked at chamomile for several health uses.
But there is an important gap here.
Research about chamomile in general is not the same as proof that a chamomile sitz bath treats piles, fissures, postpartum wounds or other medical conditions.
I could not find strong clinical evidence supporting one standard chamomile sitz-bath recipe or dose for these common conditions.
So I would not tell somebody that a particular number of flowers, tea bags or spoons is medically proven.
What Are the Possible Soothing Benefits?
Warm water itself is probably doing a lot of the work in a sitz bath.
Warm-water soaking can help soothe irritated tissue and relax the muscles around the anal area. That is one reason sitz baths are commonly used for problems such as hemorrhoid discomfort and anal fissures.
Chamomile has also been studied for possible anti-inflammatory and skin-related effects, but evidence differs depending on the preparation and condition.
There has even been clinical research into a chamomile cream for pain after an episiotomy. That study looked at a specific cream, however, not chamomile added to sitz-bath water. We shouldnt treat those two things as the same treatment.
That difference matters.
Is Chamomile Really “Natural and Safe”?
Chamomile is natural.
So is a chilli.
Natural tells us where something came from. It doesnt tell us whether our skin will like it.
Official complementary-health guidance says short-term topical chamomile use may be safe for many people, but allergic reactions can occur.
People with allergies to plants such as ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or daisies may have a greater chance of reacting to chamomile.
Published research has also identified allergens in German chamomile tea, particularly among people who already have certain plant allergies.
So I would never write:
“Chamomile is herbal, so everybody can safely put it in a sitz bath.”
That simply isnt a fair claim.
Chamomile May Irritate Some People’s Skin
This part often gets missed in home-remedy articles.
Chamomile can cause contact skin reactions in some people. Published medical literature includes reports of allergic contact dermatitis linked with topical chamomile.
Research in people already sensitive to related plants has also found reactions to chamomile-containing preparations.
This becomes more relevant with a sitz bath because the skin you are soaking may already be irritated.
If you have a fissure, surgical wound, stitches, rash or another painful condition, I dont think this is the right time to randomly test herbal mixtures.
Your doctor may have a very specific care plan.
Follow that first.
Chamomile Sitz Bath for Hemorrhoids
Warm sitz baths are commonly used to help relieve discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
But there is a difference between:
“A warm sitz bath may provide symptom relief.”
and:
“Chamomile cures hemorrhoids.”
I would support the first statement.
I would not make the second.
Chamomile shouldnt distract from other parts of hemorrhoid care, such as avoiding straining, dealing with constipation and getting medical advice when symptoms are severe or persistent.
And bleeding should not automatically be assumed to be piles.
Chamomile Sitz Bath for Anal Fissures
A warm sitz bath may help soothe an anal fissure and relax the muscles around the anus.
Again, the established part here is the warm sitz bath.
There isnt good evidence showing that adding chamomile will make an anal fissure heal faster.
If anything you add makes the area sting, itch, become red or feel worse, stop using it.
Simple warm water is still an option.
What About Chamomile After Childbirth?
This is an area where I would be more careful.
After childbirth, the perineal area can be sore and there may be stitches or healing tissue.
A warm sitz bath may be part of postpartum care for some people.
But dont assume that adding chamomile automatically makes postpartum care better.
Research has examined specific chamomile preparations for episiotomy-related discomfort, but that does not establish a standard chamomile sitz-bath treatment.
If you recently gave birth, ask your doctor what can go into the water, especially when stitches or wounds are present.

Chamomile After Rectal or Anal Surgery
Here my answer gets even shorter:
Follow your surgeon’s instructions.
If your surgeon asks you to use plain warm water, use plain warm water.
Dont add chamomile, essential oils, antiseptic liquids or another home remedy just because somebody online says it helped them.
Healing tissue doesnt need experiments.
Don’t Confuse Chamomile With Chamomile Essential Oil
This is another point I want to make very clear.
Chamomile flowers or a prepared herbal infusion and concentrated essential oil are not the same thing.
I would not randomly put concentrated essential oils into sitz-bath water.
Sensitive skin can react to products that seem harmless elsewhere on the body.
When Plain Warm Water Makes More Sense
If you are confused between plain water and five different home remedies, start simple.
For me, a good sitz-bath routine looks like this:
Clean tub → fresh warm water → comfortable soak → gently pat dry → clean and dry the tub.
You dont need to turn the water into herbal soup.
That may sound funny, but I have seen how complicated people make a very simple device.
Sometimes removing things is better than adding them.
The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual
This simple approach is also behind The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual.
Our Manual model is designed to sit on a compatible Western toilet. It uses a hand-operated pump connected with a pipe, so it doesnt need an electric motor.

Dont think that more ingredients automatically mean more healing.
So, Should You Use Chamomile?
I would describe chamomile as an optional herbal ingredient with limited condition-specific evidence, rather than a required part of sitz bathing.
There is research into chamomile and skin use, but there is not strong evidence establishing chamomile sitz baths as a treatment for common problems such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures.
Chamomile can also trigger allergic reactions in some people, especially those sensitive to related plants.
So my preference remains:
Plain warm water first.
If your doctor specifically recommends chamomile for your condition, follow their instructions about the preparation and amount.

When Should You Get Medical Help?
A sitz bath is supportive care. It cannot tell you what disease you have.
Speak with a healthcare professional if you have severe or increasing pain, fever, worsening swelling, unusual discharge, significant bleeding, or symptoms that keep coming back.
If chamomile causes burning, itching, redness, swelling or another reaction, stop using it.
And if you already know you have allergies to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums or marigolds, chamomile deserves extra caution.
A Note From Abhinav & Deepika
Deepika and I built The Heal Company around making supportive-care devices easier to use at home.
Our idea of “healing without medicines” does not mean medicine should be avoided when you need it.
A device like a sitz bath may support comfort, hygiene and recovery. It does not replace a doctor, prescribed medicine or surgery when those are needed.
That distinction is very important to us.
