How to Dry After a Sitz Bath: Proper Technique

By Abhinav Jain, Founder – The Heal Company

Heal Better. Feel Better

One small question can make a big difference after a sitz bath:

“Should I wipe myself dry, or just let the area dry on its own?”

I am Abhinav Jain, founder of The Heal Company, along with Deepika Jain. We are a Delhi-based brand, and people often focus so much on the warm-water soak that they forget what happens in the next two minutes.

My simple answer is: dont rub. Gently pat the area dry.

This is not just my opinion. Medical guidance for anal, perineal and postpartum care commonly recommends gentle drying rather than rubbing sensitive skin. An Indian government hospital’s nursing procedure for a sitz bath also specifically includes drying the patient after the bath.

So lets talk about the right way to do it.

Why Drying After a Sitz Bath Matters

A sitz bath leaves the anal and perineal area wet.

That is normal.

But once your bath is finished, you generally want the area clean and gently dried, especially if the skin is already sore or irritated. Current medical guidance for people at risk of perianal problems also recommends keeping the area clean and dry between sitz baths.

The mistake I dont like is aggressive wiping.

Imagine you have already got tender skin from piles, a fissure, childbirth or a procedure. Then you finish your soothing warm bath and rub that same area hard with a towel.

It defeats the gentle nature of the bath.

The Best Way: Pat, Don’t Rub

This is the main thing I want you to remember from this guide.

Take a clean, soft towel and gently press or pat the wet area.

Lift the towel.

Pat again if needed.

You dont need to move the towel backwards and forwards across the skin.

UK health guidance for anal itching specifically says not to wipe or rub the area after washing and recommends patting it dry with a towel or cotton wool instead.

Other medical skin-care guidance gives the same basic advice: wash gently and pat dry using a soft towel.

So remember:

Pat → Lift → Pat → Done.

Not:

Rub → Rub → Rub.

Small difference. But when skin is sore, it can feel like a very big difference.

Can I Use Toilet Paper?

For normal drying, I prefer a clean soft towel because it can be more comfortable.

But some medical guidance does say soft toilet paper can be used to gently pat the area dry.

The key word is gently.

Dont scrub the area with dry toilet paper.

And if the paper starts sticking to wet or sore skin, stop. A soft clean towel may be easier.

Can I Use a Hair Dryer?

This one surprises people.

Yes, some medical aftercare instructions do allow a hair dryer, but it should be used carefully.

Guidance after anal and rectal surgery says patients can pat dry or use a hair dryer after bathing. Another hospital’s skin-care guidance says a hair dryer can be used carefully on a cool setting if the area is sore.

If you choose this method, I would keep it simple:

Use cool air, keep the dryer away from your skin, and dont use very hot air on a sensitive area.

If your surgeon or doctor has given you different instructions, follow those.

What About After Hemorrhoids or Anal Fissures?

People often buy The Heal Company – Sitz Bath Tub Manual because they are dealing with discomfort around the anal area.

After your soak, gentle drying makes sense.

Health guidance for irritated anal skin recommends gentle washing and drying and says rubbing should be avoided.

If you have an anal fissure, hemorrhoids or another painful condition, dont assume that the sitz bath itself is the full treatment.

A sitz bath may provide comfort, but the actual cause may still need treatment.

For example, constipation and straining can be connected with anal problems. Your doctor may also advise changes involving fibre, fluids, medicines or other treatment depending on your condition.

Drying After Childbirth

After childbirth, the perineal area can be sore, especially when there has been a tear or episiotomy.

Warm shallow sitz baths are one of the options used for postpartum discomfort. Medical guidance also recommends cleaning with warm water and patting dry afterward.

This is one place where I would be extra gentle.

Dont scrub stitches.

Dont use a rough towel.

Dont start putting powders, perfumes or random creams on the area.

If you have stitches, follow the wound-care instructions given by your doctor or hospital.

Drying After Anal or Rectal Surgery

After surgery, your surgeon’s instructions come first.

Medical aftercare guidance for anal and rectal surgery recommends bathing the surgical area and then patting it dry or using a hair dryer.

But your operation may be different from somebody else’s operation.

You may have a dressing.

You may have medicine that needs to be applied afterward.

You may have specific instructions about how often to bathe.

The sitz-bath procedure used at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi also includes drying the patient and then reapplying dressings when required.

So dont copy somebody else’s post-surgery routine just because they also had a sitz bath.

What Should You Avoid After a Sitz Bath?

I would avoid making drying complicated.

Dont rub hard with a towel. Dont keep wiping the same sore skin again and again. Dont use very hot air from a hair dryer. And dont put perfume, powder or scented products around irritated anal skin just because you want it to feel “extra dry.”

Medical guidance recommends avoiding scented soaps, bath oils and perfumes around irritated anal skin.

Another current hospital guide says plain water is best for irritated anal skin and advises against putting disinfectants or antiseptics into the water because they may sting.

Simple care is often easier on sensitive skin.

Don’t Forget to Dry and Clean the Sitz Bath Too

Once you are dry, your sitz bath needs some attention as well.

Empty the used water.

Clean the tub according to its product instructions.

Drain remaining water from the system.

Let the product dry before storing it.

The Indian nursing procedure for sitz bathing also says the portable sitz bath should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s directions after use.

I dont like the idea of washing a tub and then putting it wet inside a closed cupboard.

Let it dry properly.

Whether someone is using our sitz bath in Rohini in Delhi, Powai in Mumbai, Salt Lake in Kolkata, Indiranagar in Bengaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Pune or another part of India, my drying advice remains pretty much the same:

Be gentle with the skin.

My Simple 5-Step Routine

This is the routine I personally find easiest to remember:

  1. Finish your sitz bath and stand up carefully.
  2. Allow excess water to drip away for a few seconds.
  3. Take a clean, soft towel.
  4. Gently pat the area dry. Never scrub it.
  5. Follow any medicine, dressing or wound-care instructions your doctor has given you.

If a doctor has specifically told you to keep a wound slightly moist, apply a prescribed cream, change a dressing or follow another method, their instructions come before a general internet guide.

What If Drying Hurts?

Drying should not become another painful part of the process.

If touching the area with a towel hurts, you may find gentle air drying or a hair dryer on a cool setting more comfortable where medically appropriate.

But ongoing or worsening pain deserves attention.

The same applies if you have unusual bleeding, worsening swelling, discharge, fever or a surgical wound that doesn’t look right.

A sitz bath can support comfort and hygiene. It cannot tell you why symptoms are getting worse.

A Small Step People Often Forget

When Deepika Jain and I talk about our products at The Heal Company, I keep coming back to something very basic.

The sitz bath doesn’t finish when you stand up.

The few minutes afterward matter too.

You have just given sore or sensitive skin a gentle warm-water soak. Treat the skin the same way while drying it.

No rushing. No hard rubbing. Just gentle drying.

That is the habit I would want our customers to remember.
